Off-topic: northern half of iowa

I know we have a lot of people from the Des Moines area on here, so I thought this would be a good place for finding ideas. I?m from the Clearwater Mn area, and for the last three years I?ve brought my wife and kids down to Des Moines in late January for winter jam, a Christian music festival at the Wells Fargo arena. We come down Friday morning and go home Saturday night. Few years ago we went to the avoca museum, two years ago we went through cedar falls and went through the Deere museum, and last year we went over to Omaha to the SAC museum, all of which were great.

What else is there to do in Iowa in the winter as a family? I?d like to do something Saturday before coming home.

From a religious point, you may enjoy The Grotto Of The Redemption in West Bend Iowa. Even from an architectural or labor standpoint it is impressive. Not sure about the wintertime however.

Living History Farms on the west edge of Des Moines has some winter activities. Check their website to see if your dates match something you would be interested in. It's a good place to visit.

Hickory Farms in Ames, north of Des Moines is a good place to eat if you're in the neighborhood.

I may have the name wrong, it's "Hickory" something. Their place mats tell how much meat they typically serve in a week, and it's mind boggling.

Hickory Park is the name of it. You could tour the Kinzie Innovation center at Williamsburg. Living History Farms is neat, but I'm not sure what they have going on in the winter. Des Moines has a real nice science center and botanical gardens.

I agree with the suggestion of visiting the Bily Clock Museum in Spillville, IA.

Was there years ago... should go again.

John Wayne birth place museum in Winterset Iowa. A few miles west and south of Des Moines. National Hot Air Balloon museum in Indianola Iowa, a few miles south of Des Moines. Several old restored Opera houses in the area, Pella Iowa comes to mind, national Sprint Car museum in Knoxville Iowa a few miles S.W. of Des Moines. Hope you have a great visit and a good time.
