hydraulic pipe leak - JD 6620 combine

Over the years I have had to replace a couple hydraulic pipes on my John Deere combines due to leaking. I think the leaks were always near a fitting on something like a cast valve body. I noticed the feeder house was all oily today and looked under the cab at the main valve and saw some oil dripping. When we quit I laid on the feeder house and stuck my head under the cab to take a closer look at the main valve. I could see where it was leaking. I loosened and re - tightened the compression fitting. Pipe has a double flare. Didn't help. Might have made it worst. I assume there is a crack at or near the end of the pipe. Problem is I can't see a crack. It is possible to have a hairline crack and not be able to see it with the naked eye?????? Thanks.

Every flare fitting I have had to leak was cracked. Sometimes you can see it, sometimes not.

Caused by stress and/or vibration. If you can replace all or some of it with a hose assy, all the better.

Sometimes they"re so small you can"t see them, but rub your fingernail over the flare...may feel it catch. That"s the crack. I"ve brazed steel lines with a longitudinal crack, but flare cracks cannot be fixed.

Replacing it with a hose is a good idea...takes care of the vibration. Lines need to be clamped solid within a few inches of the fitting, hoses don"t.
