Several years back, we had an exceptionally busy deer season, as the tag limits were very high for our area. That year we had a LARGE group of people who would go out hunting in a way I'd never seen before, and didn't much care for. A group of them would romp through the woods trying to flush out a deer, then some yahoo would shoot it from the road. Not cool!! They "had" to be using 2-way radios or cell phones to communicate with the shooter, but that was illegal back then as well. Well, towards the end of day one day, several of the folks were too busy field dressing deer, but there were still just a few people romping through the brush. They flushed out another deer. A truck had been driving back and forth all day, but this time the passenger didn't get out to make the shot. I saw the barrel come out the window and he took the shot, even before the truck had come to a complete stop.
I called the Sheriff's Dept., as clearly these guys had gone too far! That was the only year when we actually feared the chance of having stray rounds coming our way, as these guys were reckless! After the deer was shot and I was on the phone with dispatch, rather than these full-grown men bringing the deer 50 yards over open ground to the side of the road, they took their jacked-up 4x4 truck and drove through the ditch to the deer! They went within 10' of a DNR sign reading "NO VEHICLES BEYOND THIS POINT"! I was giving the dispatcher a play-by-play over the phone, just appalled at what I was seeing.
They loaded up their deer and got out, nice and leisurely without a care in the world. See, we live way out of town, and it took a long time for someone to arrive. As it turned out, one of my neighbors, who is on the Sheriff's Dept, responded to the call. He drove up and down the road, then pulled in to ask me if he'd missed them. I described the truck and told him they pulled out just a minute before he arrived. That's when he knew he had just passed them. The idiots even waved at him, as though taunting him.
While he and I talked, he told of how he was hitting speeds in excess of 90MPH getting out there! I sorta chewed him out about that, saying there was no reason in the world to drive that fast, even for what these idiots were doing. Then he told me what a similar group had done on his land that same year. They cut fences, ignored No Hunting or Trespassing signs, etc. He even walked into one of his fields (out of uniform, of course) and asked the guys how their season was going. They were thrilled to say how many they had gotten so far. Then he asked if they knew who owned that land. Of course, they claimed THEY did! He knew that wasn't the case, so he re-worded his question - then they said it belonged to a friend of theirs, but they had written permission to hunt there back at the camp. It was then that he pulled out his badge, explained they were on HIS land and it was HIS fence that had been cut! Unfortunately, he couldn't prove it was them that cut the fence, so had to let them go. Anyway, he wanted these guys REAL BAD!! ....But our roads just aren't designed for those kinds of speeds!
Just a side note -- it was this same deer season that there were lots of unknown people hunting the field behind our place. I couldn't get ahold of the owner (he was out hunting as well), so couldn't ask them to leave, but I had permission to post that field, and these guys ignored the signs. Late one afternoon, this one guy gets dropped off to hike into the field to hunt a spot. Apparently he didn't know about the little deer stand there, as it's something that is always there, yes easy to miss and walk right past! So I figured he was most likely trespassing, but could do nothing about it. Anyway, wife and I were out there with binoculars watching him trudge across the edge of the field. He was a large guy, very much out of shape. He finally noticed us watching him (we were in blaze orange that year, also), then became afraid - my guess, he was afraid he was about to get busted for trespassing. Anyway, here's this very "round" man (overweight!) wearing a blaze orange coverall, who actually tried to HIDE behind a small tree about 5" diameter! We were cracking up laughing!!
