OT, 540B JD Skidder

Anyone ever run one of these? I've run a 648G swinging grapple, and a couple of CAT's, but never a 540B. From what I hear they are supposed to be pretty legendary / bullet proof mid size machines?

I found one locally I am considering trying to buy, think I can get it for around $9500-10,000. Pretty good price considering the machine. Just a line/cable skidder.

Just wondering if anyone had any words of advice to watch out for when I am looking it over? I've never seen it yet, but was told it had good tires, chains all around, and a brush blade.

I had to out in the woods and fix quite a few. So not sure how "bulletproof" they were. We sold many 540Bs and even a few 740s. Final drives were one common failure area. Second to that was the Deere winches. Some came with Cargo winches instead and they held up better. Of course they get used hard - so not sure how they compare to other makes. I know we lost several logger customers who switched over to Timberjack and never went back to Deere.

I had a 440A and a 540A and I can say for sure, the B series is built much heavier.
