LA John paper pully attachment

Can anyone tell me anything about shimming the paper pully attachment on a LA john. I restored it and got her running great yesterday with the help of a few guys on yesterdays tractors but the paper pully attachment makes noise. It is like the noise transfers to the engin and sounds like both rods are knocking. Take the attachment off and she runs and sounds great. Everything is in good shape as is the bearings. I even had those old boys at Columbia Tenn. rebuild the pully itself. I know these things were shimmed to a degree but I have no idea as to what it needs. HELP.

If you take your hands and rock the pulley,(tractor not running of course) and if it has a lot of slack in it the bevel gears have too much free play and need some shims removed. I don't have any specs for this application, but would venture to say it should move just a tiny bit back and forth when it is right. Probably no more than 1/4". Look at the wear marks on the gears to see how well they are meshing also.

Prussian blue MAY BE OF ASSISTANCE IN SETTING THE GEARS. This is a little bit like setting rear end gears.
