offset disk

I am wondering why an offset disk is able to work deeper and cut through residue better than a regular tandem disk. I remember pulling one years ago with the DC case. That was a slow job, as the disk only worked 5 or 6 feet wide. I have trouble cutting up the weeds after produce crops, and even corn stalks in the fall to get it clean enough to plant wheat or rye. Wondering about getting an offset disk, maybe 8-10 ft wide. What could I pull with a 4020?

I think your best bet would be a regular tandem disc with serrated front blades and wings. Leave the wings up for added weight going over the first time, put them down for finish work. A 4020 should handle an 18' (10-12' with the wings up).

I'm not sure it has so much to do with offset as with weight per blade, blade spacing, and angle of the blades. I have a very heavy case tandem with wide blade spacing and 24" blades and it will cut like an offset. Like an offset it is not very good at smoothing either.

A few reasons I bought mine, a 7 footer I pull with a 4wd 6530 Branson in mid range gears: Weight, disc size, and spacing.

Tandem is 7" spaced, offset 9"
T is light, O isn't and with 4ea 150# JD wheel weights it gets real serious.
T discs are 18", O is 22.

Only objection is that, being 3 pt and with the weights, I have to have the hyd pump running at PTO rpms to get any kind of lift speed, like at the end of the row when I want a fast turnaround to stay out of my fence.

Picture is when I just bought it before deciding to add the JD weights....which I took off a JD 4230C I had previously and bought with the weights but didn't use them so I had them sitting around when I downsized to the Branson.

An offset will cut up crop residue especially things like corn stalks way better than a regular disk harrow.A one way or some call it a disk tiller is also good.

What type of ground and how deep are the too big questions reguarding if a tillage implement will work with a tractor. A 8 or 10 should work with that size tractor, even in clay. Much bigger disk then you'd have to start letting it up and reducing the effect from having the offset.

We ran a 6ft behind a IH W6, works great. then we have a 8ft too the 6 would pull it but worked for every foot if set deeper, so that one we usually ran with the 706. Now we jumped up to a 12ft the 706 will pull it, but again not as deep. We came across a 2+2, set the disk a tad deeper (for the bigger tractor)... still hits a few spots that tractor knows there is something back there (snort to almost stall running 3rd low).

We have a John Deere 1640 plowing disc, very heavy tandem disc. I forgot what the weight per blade was but it’s high, our 4440 knows it’s back there and it shreds vegetation.

When I first got here they were popular if talking about the same thing. Drag type, big sand bucket over offset wheel, 16 discs that ran out
to the right side in a line. 700 series poppers huffing and puffing. Did one heck of rolling fresh, veg. covered soil.

Sounds like a different thing. On offset disk has 2 gangs, one in front of the other and one throwing dirt to one direction with the second throwing it back to where it was to start. Sounds like you are thinking of disk tillers as factory called them and not an offset disk as factory called them. Areas the farmers had different names for them that the factory did so if needed repaires the dealer had to be smart enough to convert that local farmer name to what the factory called them to get the parts and that is from some areas the farmer called the disk tiller a one way.
