Cub Lo Boy Starting problems

My boss at work has a Cub Lo Boy that has started good all summer, but now it is hard starting. He said it turns over good but won't fire until he releases the starter and then it will usually start. I know I have read about similar problems before but I can't remember the cure. Is it a weak battery or a starter issue??? Thanks, Chris

A failing battery will cause starting voltage to drop to less than 70% of rated volts and still spin that 60cid engine pretty well.
I would make sure the battery is doing its job. A dragging starter motor, or a failing cable or terminal corrosion could also be to blame. If it is a later model, it could have a resistor bypass that is not working (I do not know this for sure). If 6v the cranking voltage should be above 5v. if 12v above 10.0. Jim

Cub Low Boy name was used to on a wide range of tractors that are barely related other than the engine. The original "Low Boys" are lowered Cub tractors and have same starting set up. Later ones were more or less an enlarged Cub Cadet with a Cub engine installed, also known as the "number series" low boy. These have a starter generator as used on the Cub Cadets.

If it is a numbered lowboy such as 154, 184, 185, I don't know much about them, but if it is an offset lowboy based on the original cub get a good analog voltmeter and check voltage while cranking. 4.5 is a minimum voltage. Below that look for bad battery cable, corroded connections at battery or a bad ground, or a weak battery. Above that expect coil or points. That voltage is assuming it is still 6 volts.
