Thanks for the replys last Friday. Talked to my friend today and he has some on the way from McMaster - Carr. The bolt is for a GM crankshaft on a drag car engine. thanks, joe

Funny story on a Chevy balancer bolt.

Way back in the race car days, built a 400SB for a dirt car, needed a balancer bolt, went down to the hot rod shop (yes, it was that long ago!), bought a Mr Gasket bolt.

Went to install it, wouldn't go in! Got to looking at it, instead of threads, it just had rings, zero thread pitch!

Still don't know how that happened.

I have seen bolts in a bulk box without threads, must have been a rivet got mixed up. joe

Bolts threads are generally rolled in, not cut. The bolts are forged with the threaded portion a little smaller in diameter then rolled between bars with the thread forms. The bars move in opposite directions at a slight taper to form the threads. I'd bet the machine was set up wrong, probably a few slipped through before catching the mistake. There's a good video on Utube showing how bolts are made.

When I was a kid, 10 or twelve range, I bought two new bicycle pedals at the local Western Auto store. Took them home and tried to put them on my bike. One worked and one didn't. It wasn't right hand or left hand it was rings.

Next time in town Dad and I stopped by the store to get it exchanged. My Dad made me handle it. I will never forget the grumpy, elderly clerk not wanting to take the word of a snot-nosed kid. I'll bet he ran his fingernail around that thread a couple of minutes before he said I was right and he had never seen that before.

I had that happen with a sparex brand banjo bolt for Ford tractor injector return lines, they are tiny and in a tight spot I fought with it for a half hour before I realized it was no thread just grooves!
