Chevy truck problems

One of my sons recently bought a 2013 chevy 2500 4x4 with the 6.0 gas engine and 110,000 miles. He has only had it a few weeks and it looks like he got a lemon. The first problem was a shimmy that turned out to be tie rods, wheel bearings and other front end parts. Now it is back in for front axle seals. He borrowed it to a friend and that guy said the oil light came on and it was so low on oil it didn't show on the dip stick. Took 4 quarts to fill it. Now he did not change the oil when he bought it because the sticker on the window said it had time left, but it was full. I always Change the oil on a used vehicle which he will do from now on. He has about 500 miles on it so far.

So my questions are, is front end worn out at 110,000 miles normal for a chevy? My experience is with Ford's and th at would be way soon on them. Same question for axle seals? Also how about oil burning issues? Seems I've heard something about issues with that with the chef's but again don't know much about them.

He is working with the dealer he bought it from on these issues trying to get them to either fix it or replace it, but even tho they are a large used dealer they are not a chevy dealer.

Was there a state inspection on the vehicle?
Is this your son's first 4 wheel drive?
I do not mean to be critical, but things are obviously not going well with this acquisition.

Changing out tie rods, wheel bearings, and more front end parts may have been necessary,
but the so-called death wobble might have only needed a replacement steering stabilizer.
It's a geometry problem.

Also, losing or burning four quarts of oil in 500 miles is not normal for any recent-model engine.
There should be smoke or drips to indicate the source of the problem.

I havent had time to look at it yet, so I dont know what is going on. I just wondered about oil burning since i seem to remember hearing something about that being a problem on some chev engines.

It sounds like the truck was beat to death before being turned in. I live in an oilfield and worked for a Ford dealership. Most oilfield trade-ins went directly to the auction or a wholesaler as well as any other vehicle that had had a rough life. That's how used car dealers get their "fine used cars and trucks". Check the previous owner history if you can.

110,000 miles should not be worn out, unless it was driven by a half crazed orangutan type of person, but there isn't any of those on the road is there? LOL

cant tell you about the 2500 or 4x4,but mine was a 2008 1500 chevy two wheel drive ,with a v6,It had 1,77 k on it,,and never a problem,I just talked to the young boy that bought it,,he loves it so far

Regular tires, at least now. And it came from Texas, so I dont see it having a plow. Lol. But oil field use could be in there.

The only oil burning I have heard of was the first year for the 4/8 cylinder drop, but supposedly that was corrected.

I have a '13 5.3, 2 wheel drive, 50,000 mile and it never needs oil between changes.

I have an '04 Duramax 2500 with 4x4 and 120k and it never burns oil. I am now experiencing a power steering leak that I haven't checked out. It has been used a lot pulling a horse trailer but for the ps no other problems.

A 4 year old truck with 110,000 miles? I would not call it a lemon. It is just plain and simple WORN OUT. To accumulate that many miles in just 4 years, there was very little time for maintenance.

Have a 2008 truck with 90 000 miles. Front end is good, but keep it mostly in 2WD. Being on hard surface and in 4WD will turn tough. It isn't like the rear where the differential slips.

Hasn't used any oil yet.

I brought my 07 version of that truck new. Haven't done a thing to it or had it back for anything other than a minor recall. I only have 62,000 on it but it usually has a trailer hooked to it when I do use it. I run Mobil 1 oil in it and change it about every 7500 miles. Have never had to add any oil between changes. I know of at least 3 people running that engine over 200,000 with no problem. I do know of a seal on the front end going out on one at about 150,000. I would question wither or not it had a plow on the front or a lift kit or something similar on it.

I have a 07 classic with 100,000 on it, with a Duramax, and it has never used any oil. I did have a brake job and new shocks a couple of months ago, however, and now the front end 'groans' in a hard turn. Anybody got any good ideas???

I have an 01 2500hd regular cab I bought new. It had one of the engines that sounded like the lifters were noisy. Got the engine replaced at almost 60,000 miles(extended warranty I have 185,000 miles on it now, the only 2 front wheel bearings, universal joints---normal wear, the brake lines rusted out, needed them replaced, fuel sending/fuel pump, and new calipers all around. The old engine never used oil, the replacement has never used any oil. The main problem is I think some of the counties in southern Michigan get a kickback on salt. Every time there is a sign of snow, they are out salting the roads. The rocker panels and doors are rusting and the bumper is not in god shape. 16 year old truck, I can't complain too much. I looked for at least 6 months at used trucks, anything with any warranty on them were pretty pricy. My main concern with used ones, especially the hd's are that I've seen a lot of them being "rode hard", so you don't know what any have been through. They say check car max or whatever it is called, but that is only as good as the information that is put into it. I ended up with a new 4 door 2500hd 4 door, never cared for the looks of the extended cabs. If I keep this one for 16 years, I don't figure I'll want another truck , I'll be sneaking up on 90 by then, if I am still around. My 2cents!

Rusty In THREE years I always put 100,000 on a truck. Trade ever two years with 60 to 70 thousand. And we do change oil and take care of the vehicle . Service on a pickup only takes an hour or so. I run Mobil one synthetic and change ever 7500 miles. We run Fords but to say a high mile truck can not be taken care of is not so.

jon, i did a lil digging on the oil consumption. looks like there is problems with excessive consumption on some of the 6.0 motors. i'll post a link.
poke here

2011 Chevy Silverado 4x4 Z-71 here Jon,124,000 highway miles, window switch failed, brakes front &rear replaced. I do all my own maint. L ooking for 350,000.CM Hope you did not get a hurricane truck.

I have seen the front ends worn out ford and chebby before 100K and yes you will run across some that like oil big time... I can not link them to abuse it just happens...

I have an '00 1500 4x4 with the 5.3 V8 with 214,000 miles on it. Runs great, no noticeable oil consumption.

Have 99 GMC K2500. 60 some thousand fuel pump died. 110,000 right wheel bearing replaced. Replaced front brake shoes at the time. 160 some thousand drag link and pitman arm replaced. 188,000 fuel pump went out again. 206,000 same wheel bearing again. other side still original. Replaced one ball joint when wheel bearing was changed. Still has original brake shoes on rear and same fronts since the last change. Coolant pump, clutch, spark plug wires, plugs, distributor cap, rotor and altinator. Over 210,000 now and engine goes around 1900 to 2000 miles per quart.

Jon, Hi I work for a GM dealer. Your son's problems. We do see some problems with the tie rods. Not a lot. The question would be have then been greased properly. Some forget to grease them on a oil change. Some over grease them damaging the boots. Water gets in and damages them. Hubs bearings we do not see a lot. If you replace them make sure you get the best you can buy. We find the less expensive ones only last about 6 mouths. The oil usage. Yes we do have problems. They us low tension rings. 6.0L we don't do a lot. The fix is to replace the rings. You can try cleaning. Seefom or trans fluid in the oil for about 500 miles. Then change oil. The oil rings get stuck and fill with gunk. If you want you could e-mail me the last 8 of the vin. and I could get a copy of the warranty hist. for you if want. David

mileage means nothing on used vehicles to me. a person has to know the operator and maintenance on the vehicle and the roads its been run on. a truck with 200,000 miles on pavement can very easily be in better shape than one with 50,000 miles of rough country or oil field roads! bought my 2006 duramax new and have 370,000k on it and absolutly no engine work done at all. front end has not been done either and is still ok. just tires and brakes is all the normal work i have done to this truck. ooh, and changed the batteries. mostly hyway driving plus pull a 34 ft gooseneck with hauling my tractors.

They don't get a kickback on salt, they have idiots driving. Almighty lawyers rule. Once cars slide off, cops call central dispatch for salt, they call us. Central dispatch and law enforcement has the final call. All recorded by central dispatch. We don't follow their orders, that makes the counties fully liable for an accident. Lawyers love that.

I have a 2011 Silverado 1500 crew LS I bought new that goes to the shop once a year.....for a vehicle inspection since they are honest and don't rip you off.

Jon,
I have had a 2009 Cheby 2500 4X4 crew cab (maybe you have been there) with the 6.0 gas for the past 6 -7 years.
Outside of the gas mileage, I haven't had a lick of trouble after 50,000 miles and getting close to 90,000.
Hope you don't jinx me!!!
Jim

The 5.3 active fuel management engines were the oil burners, fix was pistons and rings, most of the problem was people running the long oil change intervals if at all. Don't remember much if any problems with the 6.0. I've got a 2013 Chevy Z71 with that 5.3 AFM engine that don't use a drop of oil, nice truck.

My brother and my oldest son both have similar trucks. IF the truck has pulled a trailer a lot then the tie rod ends and wheel bearings are over due. They both use their trucks heavy and they usually have to work on the front ends every 60-75k.

The 6.0 motor doe not have a history of being an oil hog. That being said my son's will burn oil IF you go much over 3500-4000 miles on the oil. It will not burn a drop in 3000 miles but will use a quart or two at 4000 miles. These 6.0 motors have the ability to really pull. So they can really heat up the oil.

Personally I would not own a Chevy 6.0 gas motor. They are FUEL HOGS!!!!! My son's will not get over 13 MPG empty driving easy. IF you lead foot it, even empty, you can get 10 MPG easy. Pulling a loaded trailer an you can easily get down to 5-6 MPG. I am not joking. We moved my son's in-laws. His Father-in-law has a tractor collection. We moved it to Tenn. where they built a retirement home. We split the loads up to where they weight about the same. We left an got to about Peoria and he had to get gas. Had to stop again at Crawfordsville IN. There we moved one tractor to my trailer. We weighed the trailers/trucks. I was at 33K and he was down to 22K. HE got up to 7-8 MPG and I was still getting 12-13 pulling 5 1/2 ton more. The next trip we left his truck at home and brought the semi and drop deck. It got 8-9 MPG weighing 55K. LOL
