Started on corn today

Saw one combine in the entire neighborhood this late afternoon. Was in corn.

I'll guess a few more appear tomorrow.

West of me a few more rigs are running.

Yes, I can only dream of that bpa number. Probably come close in the center of the fields but the 50 feet around the outside suffers heavy predation from the wildlife. Hunters compensate me well for the losses but then I have to put up with the hunters. :)

I need it a bit dryer too so that I am not paying the elevator a heavy percentage for drying.

Mid November seems to be the sweet spot and it looks like it will be just about ready to go then.

I am still rained out. Whats done so far is around 160/bpa and 15% or less, beans going 60/bpa and 10%. Southern indiana

not growing up in Northern Indiana I've always questioned the guys (most) around here. get it in as fast as you can regardless. I've seen them working on corn that looked like it was about right for chopping.

Doesn't make any sense to me to combine with high moisture and pay for drying, your dryer or the elevator. or combining in the rain. N. Indiana is the only place I've ever seen that done.

Seems like the same thing with wheat. cut as fast as you can. don't worry you're leaving 1/4 of it in the field.

Rarely seen corn here dry enough to go straight into the bin. Most guys start combining at the 25 % or even a bit higher, just to get it off before the snow flies. Once it gets cold, the crop does not dry much anymore. There has been some years when we took corn off at 29 to 31 percent, even late in the season, due to a cool summer. Drying costs can run up to $100 per acre or more, but it's just one of those things where you pay it now,and get it done, or pay later with weather related yield loss. Always some fun! Ben
