1953 John Deere 50

well thought I got a deal when I bought a John Deere 50 for $500 changed the oil and filter put clean gas in it filed the points turned the switch on hit the starter didn't even choke it started right up ran less then a minute then she started to smoke then came the engine oil out the muffler gave me a nice bath before I could get it shut down where should I start to look for my problem stuck rings? burnt valve? thanks for any advise

Possibly running backwards? Pull started my 40 once and had it in reverse instead of 3rd, wanted to run but blew a bunch of oil out of the air cleaner.

Did you possibly overfill the oil? Should take 7.5 quarts if I remember right (just starting to drain out the level check plug on the side)...

I would guess blew a hole in a piston, no other way to get that much oil in combustion chamber. And it had to get in there to blow the oil out all over. It was shut down before oil level got down to noticeable amount. But still a couple of table spoons will act like a lot blowing out like that. Do a compression check and if it is that will show up imidiatly.
