I have met up with several in my 40 plus years driving. ( met some that acted like the south end of a northbound mule, too.) Most will treat folks the way they are being treated. They have a job to do too.

Probably like any other profession, I have met a number of them and most were good guys. Two I got to know through the fire service. Two had very nice Farmalls that they were trying to get good hooks with at a fair in Maine.

Hello Greg K,

You said nice, which lets me read no ticket? By the way around here they are called compliance officers. The polite ones WILL give you a ticket,

Guido.

Coming back through Ithaca with an empty truck, just over a year ago, I was pulled into a DOT check. The officer was a former truck owner, very knowledgeable and decent. The only thing he found was he got a little wiggle on one of the master brake chamber housing mounts. He sent me on my way with a repair order, which I took care of when I got home. This similar scenario had happened to me years before, the but the uniformed state trooper was unfriendly.

Some years ago, I pulled through a port of entry in Marysville, KS with a pickup on a trailer. The officer asked, "Is that pickup on the trailer for sale or for your own use?"

I told him it was for sale. He replied, "Dang it, I wish you'd have said it was for your own use. If it's for sale, I have to write up a bunch of paperwork and charge you a fee. Let's start this conversation over again. Is the pickup for your own use or for sale?"

I told him it was for my own use. (Wasn't lying. I probably used it a few times myself before I sold it).

Anyway, he grinned and said, "You're good to go. Have a nice drive".

He either didn't notice that my trailer was 6" too wide to be legal in Kansas, or he chose to look the other way on that, too.

Well, got a fix it ticket. Which was better than I could expect. They were very polite and professional.

The 38 years I drove I had one women Ind. Dot officer that got a little nasty and a Gary Ind. city cop that was trying to find something wrong with rig. Out side of that I had no problems with any of the other officers in Ind., ILL.,or Mich.

Bought a tractor at auction in Oregon about 30 years ago, stopped at a weigh station in WA on way home- guy told me if I was hauling my own stuff and under 16,000 GVW, don?t stop, just wave as you go by. I didn?t ask, and he didn?t volunteer the question, how will you know whether its mine or for hire, if I don?t stop? I?m never over 16,000 with my outfit, so haven?t stopped since.

I was on my Albertson generator inspection trip. On I-10 Texas into Louisiana. Passed the check station as I had always done. Two miles down the road got pulled over by the state police for not stopping. I tried to tell him that I had been doing it this way twice a year for ten years. An ISUZU pick up wasn't required to stop. He said commercial signs on truck means you stop.Of course he wouldn't let me use the emergency turn around. So I had to go down the road to the public one.

So back to the check station walk in told the desk guy what happened. He looked at me and said I wish they would transfer that guy up north. He stamped me some paper work. Telling me not required to stop.Truck doesn't meet load requirements. To stop for inspection.

No! She was at the scales on I-94 between Chesterton and Michigan City Indiana. The crazy part was that I was hauling HazMat and had come over the scales on I-80 just east of Joliet ILL. with no problems but she tried picking at everything to find something wrong but couldn't find anything. She wasted about 45 minutes of my time and companies time + explain the down time to boss that shows up on Tach O Graft.

Most of the polite and professional DOT (MTO) officers I have met were in Ontario. Spent my fair share of time visiting with them. They were doing their job you were doing yours. If you weren't sure how to cross the i's and dot your t's they would explain it to you if asked nicely.

Can't say the same for many of the ones I have met in the states, especially the north east.

Hello Greg K,

Yep, I had my share of stops, never found a problem though. Usually the rig was being shuttled by me after PM was completed. They were curious about the disk brakes though, first time I gave them the 5 minutes tour,

Guido.

Goose, that's my home town, or at least where I went to high school, home of Landoll mfg. Sounds like they treated you well. Hopefully there are still some folks around there today that will still treat you right. There is no port of entry(coop) there anymore, I think there is a sign warning about knowing that State of Kansas roads are regulated by the Kansas Dept. of Trans. As well as a phone number and website.

My old boss retired from AT&T and became Ga Dot officer. One day he was talking about how bad flys were that year. I told him they were kind flies. He asked what a kind fly was and I told him the kind that follows a horses rear. He said are you calling me a horses ---. I said I wasn't but them flies are pretty smart. Tommy
