Yesterday I just bought a Farmall 504 with a fully hydraulic loader on it and 3pt. It has new engine oil and filters and new hydraulic fluid and filters with new spark plugs. It has been extremely well taken care of it is in like mint condition. I will post a picture next weekend when it comes to the farm. I wanted a loader tractor that I wasn?t going to have to work on all the time so I decided to buy one that cost a little more. The guy was asking $5,200 and I got it for $4,900. Do you guys think it is an okay deal?

I would think that you paid enough! I do not often buy tractors with gas engines but I do not pay over $3000 for any, and that includes those with front loaders, just saying. Most buyers today want diesel engines in their tractors and there are fewer and fewer who can keep up with the electric ignition system that a gas engine requires.
Just saying but I hope you have good luck with your 504 and they were good little tractors.

I think for a good functioning loader tractor you did good. Anytime I have paid what I thought was a bargain price, I turned around and spent another 3-4K to get the tractor in the shape I wanted. If this thing is ready to go, you did alright.

If your happy with the deal, that's what counts. It might have been better to ask opinions before the purchase.

that might be a little high based just on price, but that's not the whole picture, obviously condition is the most important, a lot of those were used as chore tractors, and just ragged out yours wasn't. what kind of previous work was done to the mechanicals, any major overhauling would make the price where you saved money rather than spent it since you dont have to pay for that in the future, but more than any price, if that tractor does the job you need it for, and lasts for a long time, you did good

I think you did just fine. You're going to love the loader.

If it meets your needs and you had the money don't worry if you paid to much. I have bought 4020 John Deere's for $3500 and have paid as high as $10,000. Sometimes the higher priced ones are the best buys as they do not need part and repairs or the time it takes to do them. To me it is like selling corn or beans, once you sell them do not watch the market as you will beat yourself up if the price goes up. Enjoy your tractor. Tom

Don't know about the rest of the posters here, but 5g for a MINT loader tractor is a bargain. Ben

I think you did fine if it's as nice as you say it is. Like stated earlier you can pay little or nothing for a tractor and then spend more than what you have in this one just to get it back up to snuff.

Tires are a big thing. If the tractor has good or new tires, that can easily double the value of the tractor.

You also have to take into consideration that prices are all over the place. Some areas have a better supply of used tractors which brings the price down. Certain tractors are more or less popular in different areas, driving the price down or up as well.

With a loader, excellent shape and if the tires are good you might have went a bit high - but it depends on how it runs out when you get it. If everything is as it should be and you only have get in the seat and use it the price is good. I'm used to getting something and spending 1/3 to 1/2 the purchase price getting in good reliable running condition and that's not counting my labor.

For a light duty chore tractor I wouldn't worry about gas vs diesel. Fuel will be the low end of you expenses with either.

I bought a 504 utility with loader for $2,500 at auction, and used if for about 5 years, then decided to sell, as it was pretty tired, and surplus to my needs. It ran OK, but the guy driving it through the consignment auction had it at full throttle, and the blow-by through the vent tube was raising so much dust you could hardly see the tractor. I got 1500, but figure the auction house driver cost me about a grand.
