8n Hydraulics

I'm going to replace the hydraulic cylinder and piston in my 8N, side mount distributor. I've been looking at the manuals and on line sites about how to do it. I'm confortable with everything expect two things: the oil tube, and soaking the leather ring in water.

It seems wrong to soak it in water instead of gear oil. The amount of water getting into the gear oil is minuscule I'm sure, but maybe I'm being to cautious. Anyway, will it really make a difference?

As to the oil tube, I've seen absolutely nothing about the oil tube, only diagrams and pictures with an arrow pointing to it. I did see a posting about how to manufacture one and flare the ends to install it. Does the lift cover just come off and go back on with the oil tube in the right place and everything's fine? Must be something like that to cause no mention of it in the manual. Thanks, Spencer in Tallahassee

don't know about the tube, but as for the seal, water will swell the seal and make it more pliable. the water will soak in much better then oil. just soak for 20 minutes or so in warm water and you'll be fine.

I pulled the top cover off from an 8N a few years ago and don't remember a tube. Seems like the oil passage was through the rear end casting and right into the cover.

Thanks Bob, and also Ohiojim re soaking the leather seal. I had thought the oil passage way might be through the end casting but could not find any reference to it anywhere I looked. Will probably be next week before I can take the lift cover off, and all post what I find when I get it off.
