OT:Chipped dog, found one

I will try to condense. Found a nice lab mix maybe little pit bull 3 weeks ago. I live in rural farm country with houses around some, out from town so folks drop cats and some dogs. This dog sat at the intersection for 3 days and nights perking up at every car and no neighbor claimed it. Finally my daughter took it in. Week ago she went to a kinda low budget walk in vet and they scanned and said no chip and my daughter paid for shots. Friday we went to our vet to set up spaying and they scanned and found chip. Not their "brand" so the vets searched while we waited and made several phone calls and found chip service and they provided name and address and phone of owner from other side of U. S. But they also said chip was put in about 50 miles from us 1 1/2 yrs ago and that shelter was closed for the day. The chip place called the lady ID'd on the chip while vet was on the line and left their number and my daughter's and my daughter called her too, later. Its now a day and a half and no one called claiming the dog. My daughter and her boyfriend are loving the dog and will give it a good home. Her boyfriend worked the net and FB and was able to "locate"(stalk) a pic of a family on that pet shelter's FB page showing pet adoptions BUT not this dog and they look loving enough. I know nothing of how chipping services work but if you lost your dog wouldn't you call the chip place and report her lost and have them put out a notice for when someone called? Nothing was posted in our area or on CL or FB. The vet figures it was dumped and so do I. I've had dogs cruise through looking for food but this dog waited on that corner looking at every car. But why would you chip a pet and dump it? My daughter doesn't want to get more attached if she needs to give it back. But we cant understand why they weren't posting or looking for it either. My daughter wants to put a lot more effort into reaching out but I say these folks got called and never replied nor posted a "lost" notice so keep it.

I would say possession is 9/10 of the law and give up looking. Old owners obviously have no desire. Keep the dog, get attached and move on.

There is no explaining some dumb things humans do.

We are in a similar situation in a small town, I have always been amazed by what people will do to dogs and cats. We seem to have always had a collection of dogs that just show up half starved, one foot in the grave. Fortunately we've built a relationship with a good vet that knows we're not out looking for them but don't run them off or over either. Dogs are funny........I've had the occasional dog bite, waded into a few dog fights to break it up, but after they get their legs back under them, food in their belly, their disposition changes and they defend the place like it's always been theirs. There's a special place for those kind of people that mistreat them.

My daughter's fear, and I may have planted it, is that the owner can show up any time, even in months and force her to give it up since the chip is proof that the person owns it. Is that how it works?

The vet chipped my cat I did not ask for it to be done and never would on a CAT. The cat was a walk on and could walk off anytime it wanted too...
My guess that dong was dumped...

I have no idea, never asked to have one checked for a chip. Did you say the dog went through a shelter?? Maybe they would be of some help establishing ownership, maybe ask that the record of the chip be changed. Most of the shelters I have heard of would not be appreciative of an animal they put effort into keeping and finding a home being dumped. Call the vet to confirm he would verify the story and then call the shelter and give them the details and ask them what the best next step is. There are laws pertaining to abandonment of animals, as strong a case as someone might have because of what the chip says regarding ownership..........the details, as you have presented them, seem pretty strong that the chip is telling who abandoned the dog.

A lot of folks don't realize how challenging a young Lab can be. That is why so many wind up in shelters or abandoned. I got my Molly as an eight week old puppy. My daughter is a Vet, so she spayed her and chipped her. From puppy, till they are about three years old they can drive you nuts. You have to be a special "dog" person to tolerate a young Lab.
Tell your daughter to keep the dog, and give it all the love it can handle. It will reciprocate and love her as well.

Funny my oldest Daughter had a similar thing happen, a chipped dog wandered into her place (just north of Grand Rapids), they've tried to contact the owners and the clinic that chipped the dog and aren't getting any response. Looks like they've got a dog now, this might be a good sign as about a year and a half ago she adopted a rescue dog that appears to have been a Huskie-Basenji mix that put her through heck, about the time the dog started behaving he had a relapse, got free and got hit by a car. That tore my daughter up pretty bad.

My understanding is the chip does no good in locating the owner if the owner doesn't register it when it is inserted. And with several different manufactures of these chips it is no guarantee a vet will be able to read it with their scanner.

How about sending the registered owner a registered letter offering to return the dog. Allow a reasonable amount of time to claim the dog, after which they lose their rights to reclaim the dog. If no response, you will have done all you can reasonably be expected to do to return the dog. Then have the chip removed and claim the dog as your own.

About 10 years ago we got a dog from a shelter that had been chipped. They couldn't get a hold of the owner. When we adopted the dog they changed the contact info on the chip to my wife. So I know it can be done. Good for your daughter giving the dog a home.

Around chipped cat found us, a nice Ragdoll. Vet found the chip and we called and called on it with no response. Guess they didn't want her anymore. Don't understand paying good money for an animal then dumping it.

I just can't imagine someone dumping a dog. Think how that dog felt looking for their owner every day. Keep it. It's got a better home now.
