There ain't nothing like an old John Deere

Hell, I've always been a JD fan, since I was a little boy. My grandpa used to have a John Deere 730 and he'd let me start it up everytime I visited his farm. I feel like it just ain't as much ingenuity that goes into making them anymore. Anyone else feel the same way??

What was ingenuity was how JD was able to keep the 2 cylinders competitive enough to maintain and even grow market share in the mid to late 50s. We have everything from the antique 50s combines and tractors up to current models. I marvel at the simplicity of the yesterday tractors/combines but these newer machines have been just as reliable for considering how much more is asked of them. Take my JD 55 combine for example. I'm pretty sure it will still be around 50 years from now when our current S670s are gut washed. But our two 670s processed more grain this year then that 55 has its entire life time. Some of the worst tractors we've had were built before the pre electronic pre emissions era.

they were built back then with the ingenuity they had... now way too much computerized ingenuity!its a computer world now. self driving vehicles are coming out. as willie says, "the world has gone to pot"!

How did a 730 have any ingenuity? It was 1920's technology and a 720/30 drives like a steam engine. That's good there isn't anything else like them because that way I didn't have to run them growing up.

When I was in the Navy we had what we called the K.I.S.S principal keep it simple stupid. It is harder to
keep a design simple. Now days if you don't have a cad program your not a designer.

You are wrong on so many levels on the JD 720 730 series. Best fuel economy for years. Good hydraulics with draft control. Dependable power steering. easy to get on and off. Rugged with lugging torque , did not need any woope de do leavers like many others . Held value very well.

There was very little ingenuity in the two cylinders, just old technology and brute force, Deere would have been busted if not switched to new generation, that was ingenuity.

A friend of mine was telling me how cheap the electronics and wiring harnesses are in everything nowadays, everything including cars, trucks, tractors, construction equipment, etc. It's not just one brand it's all brands (including JD). The engineers pretty well know when everything is going to fail.

It was almost depressing listening him saw how all these companies are shoving this junk down our throats and not standing behind the quality of their products anymore.

The K.I.S.S. principal is what it should still be, the world would be better for it. And when John Deere went to the new generation tractors they lost me for a customer. Would not own one for use.

I would have to disagree, there is way more ingenuity going into modern equipment.

Unfortunately too much of it is being focused on maximizing profit for the manufacturer and not enough being focused on building a product that will last for generations.

Is this not what all these companies forefathers built there name, reputation and customer loyalty base upon?

That saying has always bugged me. I prefer to say "[i:0882ee9824]Keep it stupidly simple[/i:0882ee9824]".
