American flag on flag pole

I bought a flag and a flag pole from the VFW as they were putting new poles in the park. I asked my buddy if he wanted one but he said no becouse you have to have a light on it at night or its disrespectful. I have never herd this before, and I dont want to be disrespectful. Whats you thoughts as I really dont want a light in my yard, I like it dark.

?The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the
flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary
flag staffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is
desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly
illuminated during the hours of darkness.?

I use a spot light at base of pole, directed straight up at flag. This does not light up the yard, and the scene is wonderful...have done this for 40 years and get many compliments from people passing by. Wonderful scene when it is foggy or snowing....the light beam straight up is magnificent.

To answer your question, yes, a flag must be lighted if displayed at night.

They make solar lights that attach to the pole, or elsewhere, to illuminate the flag at night.

Your friend is correct to correctly fly the flag at night it should be with a light on it. There are many places one can look to find the correct way to fly a flag. The Boy Scout code is one of a number of them

You might consider lowering the flag before dark.

Seeing flags set out will nilly with no concern for after dark illumination or bring it in has always bugged me. My thought is that it is better to not put it up than to do it incorrectly.

[The American Legion interprets “ proper illumination” as a light specifically placed to illuminate the flag (preferred) or having a light source sufficient to illuminate the flag so it is recognizable as such by the casual observer.]

This is pasted from the Legion website. If there is enough ambient light you should not need a dedicated light source.

REGARDLESS if it's displayed right or wrong, I will stand, remove my hat, and put my hand over my heart UNLIKE some. Like the one lady said they interviewed on TV, I KNEEEL before the Lord, I STAND for the Flag.

John T Conservative Christian Fuddy Duddy. God, Family and Country are my priorities. Don't you feel sorry for all the mega rich Hollywood abundant Elites on drugs with many committing suicide, and THEY are the ones trying to tell the rest of us peasants in the heartland how to think, how to speak, what to like or dislike and how to vote YEAH RIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!! I will remain one what they referred to as "Deplorables" and I'm soooooooooo happy and content and at peace with that yayyyyyyyy. I think I will go and NOT watch football now.

I have a solar light that sits atop the pole and shines down on the flag. Between it and the yard/security light I consider it illuminated. One caution, If you are expecting thunderstorms or high winds, take it down. The flag has a tendency to rip at the seams and also your flag pole could be bent. My wife has repaired the flags a few time and we've replaced it a few times. Do fly the Flag. God Bless America. gobble

One source of a solar light, which shines vertically onto the flag, is Uncommon USA, Lombard, Il, 1-800-419-5880.

Neighbor is a retired bird Colonel- Has a tall flag pole and spotlight at the base. He told me that it must be illuminated if flown at night- he took it down every night when he first built the setup, but liked the effect of the light on it at night, so installed the spotlight.

There is etiquette with anything. I was taught you don't fly the flag at night unless there is a light on it. You also don't fly the flag in the rain.

US navy ships at sea do not fly the flag unless cruising near land, when falling in with other ships, coming to anchor, in combat, etc.). If they were to keep them flying at all times they would need hundreds due to the wind.

Then they should read it! I've instructed 3 different troop leaders how to march the flag at parades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I fly mine 24/7/365 I need to update the light.
My dad (RIP was in service) said you can take the flag down before rain, but if it is already raining, leave it up)
My feeling is if you take it down in adverse conditions, it means the country is soft. Mine and I sand ready 24/7/365, not just when it is nice out
