Here's a couple of casting dates off my 53 Super M, Y is the year code for 53, you'll see one pict., maybe the first with an X year which is 1952. Original engine had a busted center cam brg. web. Bought this one on E bay and didn't notice until I got it home that it was built towards the middle of Dec.52 and the original was built about two weeks into 53. One pict. is from the belt pulley, one from transmission cover and the other of center section or trans case, don't remember and I just went out and took them.

If 17735 is stamped in block to right of your distributor body in picture and just above the steel side cover the engine is a 40 model. Lots of 40 model M tractor and engine numbers matched but no guarantee. Frame rails and front engine mounts also put tractor in 1940. PTO picture to fuzzy to tell which early type it is for sure. Gear shift lever and seat are newer parts along with radiator, fan enclose and maybe grill. Looks like a 3 point top link made up and mounted under seat.
