it looks temporary, yeah, target practice maybe. Homeland security is in cahoots with the power company's (offering a subsidize) otherwise, dunno

Does your utility use the remote reading meters? Or off peak control? Could it be a signal booster for the communication with the meters?

ikely.

ComEd as in Commonwealth Edison, probably a repeater to send info (smart meter data) to your elec company,

Once you start paying attention to these types of devices on power poles, you might be surprised at how many of them you can see around and a lot of them look different. These can relay about any signal or info you want but are mainly used for utility companies to read and send info back and forth from utility compnaies. Some of the boxes you see may be used for wireless communications for police and emergency depts, some of them are setup for storm sirens etc.

This evening my nephew who works for a power company setting up boxes like that was explaining to me what they are for. 4play is right, they relay information to the power company. Sometimes the information is about hertz which can normally vary from 59 to 61 depending on the load. I have a feeling one well placed .22 bullet would end up involving more than the local sheriff if someone felt so inclined.

No it doesn't. Every generating station on the grid runs at exactly the same frequency, which is precisely controlled.

I don't know. We do have electronically read meters. May support that. May be sensor transmitters for power outages. First responders after a storm can do a much better job if they know exactly where power is out rather than having to rely on callers out of power or driving around looking for dark areas. Our COOP serves about 10,000 meters and that's a lot for second guessing who has and who doesn't.

It doesn't matter what it is, it is someone elses property. Advice to shoot it is not only completely wrong, it's likely to land you in jail. Plus, idiots that do things like that are just helping erode our diminishing gun rights. So, whatever it is, leave it alone.

Go to your power company web site, they may have an explanation of what it is. Or you could call them and ask. Let us know what you find out. joe

I agree it's exactly 60 he at the power generator but it can momentarily vary just a twitch way out in the outreaches.

easy bret, we were just kidding around, no bodys gonna shoot it. its pretty odd that its there, i am at the end of that power line run. the line ends
at my drive and the transformer is for the 200 amp service for the grain bins. it does not feed a house. pretty much only use power there when
the bin fans are running. power company did switch out the meter with one of those smart meters. it does say repeater on the box.
