Roto tiller issues.

Went to till the garden and long story short wore out another belt on the tiller. Same thing that happened to the last 3 belts. Belts are rolling over in the v-pulleys then slipping. Tiller was bought brand new late last summer. I'm starting to wonder if the engine and transmission is not square to each other. Looking for ideas. Thanks, Sod Buster

My Craftsman tiller did that once shortly after being brand new. I removed the belt and found it to be very limp and even stretchy. Bought a new belt from NAPA. No more troubles.

Sounds like pulleys are misaligned. Use a straight edge and give it a check. There should slots on frame so one can loosen bolts and slide stuff around and line things up.

Alignment problem, bent pulley, foreign objects getting caught under the pulley can cause this. Could be as simple as a pulley positioned wrong on the shaft.

Also, if this uses a tensioning idler to engage/disengage the drive, there should be some pins, brackets, guards, something to keep the belt in the groove when the drive is disengaged.

Are the replacement belts coming from the dealer? Sometimes the manufacturers use special belts, just different enough aftermarket belts won't work. If you are using aftermarket belts, be sure that are the right cross section.

(quoted from post at 09:56:13 10/02/17) Thinking about getting a tiller this fall. Which brand is causing this anguish?

If you take a good, hard look at 4 or 5 different brands, you will notice that the only difference is the color of the paint and the logos. Buy the one that is the best deal. They're all the same.

I bought a new Craftsman rear tine about 3 years ago. It was on sale. It will do everything that the Troy-Bilt Horse I had before would do, but I have serious doubts the Craftsman will live nearly as long.
