Traveling through Colorado this week we saw a lot of alfalfa fields.In the central U.S how far south can alfalfa be grown.

Alfalfa originated in the middle east. It can handle heat! Needs water, though.

The biggest setbacks to alfalfa are poor drainage and acid soils.

There are several newer varieties that have been developed specifically for the deep south although ''common'' alfalfa was grown for many years all over Louisiana. Years ago when seed out of Texas was cheap Alfalfa was used as a winter annual just like clover is used nowdays. In our climate alfalfa can be planted earlier in the fall and is actually ready to graze or chop much quicker than clover or vetch.

I have a little alfalfa in my hay but I only see it in the very dry years. Seems to grow better along the road.
