We have a 9 yr old Crosley wash machine. My poor wife had to keep going every once and awhile to fiddle with the timer switch to keep it going. Would just stop what it was doing or get going on the wrong cycle. Soo I figured if all the functions work properly but stopping or getting mixed up than it must be the timer. The dumb timer was just under $200 after taxes. Had we called the appliance repair man he would have charged $90 to drive out and look at it. Than he'd say the timer is $200 another $55 for the second service call because he'd have to order it (didn't have it in stock because I got it from him and he had to order it) and $50 more for the repair so it's likely not worth fixing. Not saying at all that those charges aren't at all fair (I've had appliance service calls before so in not making up the fees) but it sure does pay off sometimes to use your wrenches and take a chance.

Tried that too,$65 us on a site that doesn't ship
here. Didn't have any luck finding one online that
would.

I had a old Kenmore Washer I kept running for years. Bought a GE that didn't last long. I have a good GE now, everything push button. It stopped coming on sometimes. The wife stood there pushing buttons for a long time until it started. She started talking about a new machine. I bought a new control panel off ebay used. Now the thing actually works. Sometimes things just work out. Stan

Good job! I can understand not putting $395 into a nine year old washing machine that can be replaced for $375 plus tax. I'm not sure if I would have put $200 and several hours of my time into it either.

Haha me either if I could have gotten a new one that cheap, the washing units start at $500 on up here unfortunately

Good job. I generally don't have the patience to work on appliances but lately I have sucked it up and taken them apart. One was a circuit board in the dish washer that needed a drop of solder and the other was the ice maker in the refrig. Both repairs were successful. Our dryer is a 20 year old Maytag that keeps plugging along with a new part or two thrown at it every five years or so. Sometimes replacing the part isn't as bad as making the diagnosis. The gas flame wouldn't light sporatically and i didn't know where to begin fixing it so we gave in and called the service man. He diagnosed it as an ignitor going bad. I would not have thought of that. I do have to give thanks to those who take the time to make the youtube appliance diagnostic videos. These guys are saints!

I'm kind of like you Philip. I've replace numerous timers on the old style machines. Latch broke on the dryer door. Piece of velcro screwed to the side fixed that problem. Replaced a belt, idler pulley when the dryer was making a terrible grinding noise etc. Every time the wife said, "need a new one". Eventually after about 20 yrs I gave in when she got that "look" and I knew the duct tape fix was not going to work that time.

Few years back, the knob broke on the "new" front loader dryer. I found an old stove someone was throwing out and grabbed a knob off of it. Fit perfectly and it doesn't matter that it has a temp scale on it (200,250, etc). Neighbor laughed when he saw it and gave me a knob off of an old stove he had. I saved it in a drawer. Well, guess what? Just the other day, the knob on the washer broke. Now I've got 2 laundry appliances with stove knobs but they work.

Good job! I have done many repairs. Next time, check Repairclinic.com They have almost everything, and usually are allot cheaper, not sure if they ship

Our old whirlpool bit the dust about 2 years ago.I should have fixed but didn't.Went and bought a new G E that was a mistake but it was one of only 3 that has a dasher. But it might as well not have it will not get clothes clean.Me an the whole family hates the damn thing. My neighbor give me a 14 year old whirlpool he thought it had a motor burnt up. But didn't did a bunch of testing and it was the lid switch, about $6. Been working perfect for a year.I parked that G E in the back of the basement. It will never b used here again,in fact I won' never buy anything G E again. The neighbor that give me the old whirlpool bought a G E similar to the one I got and they hate it too.

Had a GE already in place where we moved to and used it for about three months and the wife said she couldn't get the timer to turn to the the proper cycle any more. I just pushed it out of the way and put the old whirlpool on line. After a while I looked at the GE and the push pull knob had the plastic teeth worn off both on the knob and the timer side. After looking at it for a while I noticed that the inner ring with the arrow on it (behind the knob) was also connected to the timer axle with a slot. By turning the ring you could pick the cycle wanted. Only problem was the face of ring is slick and so I filed grooves in it and that solved the problem. Just sold it the other day and explained it all to the buyer and he was ok with it.

All the new HE, High Efficiency, washers seem to be junk. They don't wash clothes clean, take forever, make a mess of the clothes, and do not last. Also they do not use enough water to really clean or rinse. And you can not open the lid once started. Only the government thru regulations can screw-up something so bad.

My son just bought a new Speed Queen, built in USA with technology like the old machines that used water and lasted forever. You can open the lid at any time. He says its a beast, first clean clothes he has had in years and washed in under 40 minutes. Novel idea, a washing machine that actually washes dirty clothes.

If my old Maytag breaks, I'm going to take a long hard look at repairing it before looking for a new one.

Way to go. We held out replacing our 20 year-old Maytag until about 3 years ago. That Maytag never needed but 1 or 2 repairs, and the repair guys kept telling us to just keep it going.

Same experience a new Samsung HE 'electronic' washer, doesn't live up to expectations. The appliance store salesman are vultures and trick people into buying them (like my wife). And it takes forever to wash a large load ... the panel says 1:48 minutes but actually takes close to 2 hours. Water never really gets hot.

Yep ! We recently bought a Speed Queen, as it's tough and 'old style' controls..
I think they do have one model with 'push buttons'.. Several in my family have
gone to Speed Queen and love them.

Just put third set of dogs and thrust washer in my 27 year old Whirlpool washer. Total repair cst $8

Good work. I had trouble with mine a few months back. Thought it was the timer. Paid $175 for the timer and installed it. Still didn't work. After much swearing and staring at various things, found the wire to the door switch broken. Was lucky enough to get a refund on the timer, after I spent quite a bit of time removing it. That lesson ate a lot of time!

You can often save a lot on the part itself buying on line.

I found parts for my GE stove on line when an electrical grounding problem messed up the control panel (twice, but that's another story). It was about $125 and a just a few minutes work to replace it. Google can be your friend, just not always!

That's where I got my stove part! No hassles with them and they ship pretty fast.
