OT- I need some computer related help.

Hi to any computer literate persons: I have used (in the past) Microsoft Access data base to make lists of hobby related items. I also imported some of those files to Open Office, which worked pretty well.. All this on an old computer running Windows XP. The old computer still works, but I don't trust it to keep going.

My present "good" computer has Windows 8.1; I don't have Open Office nor MS Access on it. Does anyone reading this use Open Office, and will it work on my Win 8.1 computer??? Any help or suggestions welcome. This is hobby related, not business, so it is like playing crosswords or Sudoku.
Thanks much,

I am using OpenOfficc 4.1.1 and yes it should work on Windows 8.1.

OpenOffice does have database capability, but will not be as "sophisticated" as Access.

Hope this helps.

Hasn't Open Office splintered into 3 different projects now, Apache, and another one?

Might want to research a little on which, if any, is working with the database better.

Yea, Open Office has turned into Apache Open Office, and Lbre Office is a free competitor and might actually have more development these days.

Sun developed Open Office for themselves, and opened it up for free for everyone at some point. When Corel bought out Sun, they got out from under it, and just gave it to the Apache group.

I use LibreOffice regularly and it works well. I have not used its database component "LibreOffice Base" (or Access for that matter), so I can't comment on its capability.

Open Office works with W 10 on ours. I'd guess your database stuff would also work with later versions of OO.

IIRC OO uses Java and Libre doesn't

When I upgraded everything to Win 10 I bought a DVD with three licenses for genuine Microsoft Office 2007 (which has Access) dirt cheap (something like $10 or $20) on Ebay.

I use Office Libre so no experience with Open office.
This implies it will work .

I thank all those who gave their thoughtful answers, I now feel confident to down load Open Office and try it on a copy my data. Much appreciated!!

When I was messing with a Windows 10 computer to see what it was all about I loaded Office 97 on it just to see if it would work. Office 97 was the last version of office I bought because it did everything I needed. Discovered it worked fine on Windows 7 and 10 as a test.

Might try loading your present version of Access on the new computer, might just work fine.
