Super A exhaust manifold

Purchased a new manifold. The old one was shot. Replaced head gasket. Fixed a stuck valve by remove and cleaning. Did all eight valves while I was I there. Put it all back together couldn't get it to run. Unnoticed two littles holes in manifold above the left carb but. Did not notice these on old one. Had a little gas leaking out of the front hole. Tried turning it over, but it sounded like it was sucking air somewhere. Upon further inspection I found two bolt holes on the inner two exhasut valves ( I noticed because of the sooty black stuff sprayed all over side of engine). Didn't have the correct three bolts. 3/8 corse and it must be 3/8 fine. Stuck them in the two holes just enough to plug the holes and she started right up. Why would these holes be in there? I need to go get the proper two bolts. Let it run for about 30 minutes, took valve cover off, rocket arm off and tighten all head bolts while to 90 foot pounds. Put all back together. Started right up. Had tiny leak in bottom radiator hose. Tighten the band and seems to be good. Just curious as to what the holes are for in the manifold?

I suspect the holes are supposed to be plugged, possibly with 1/8" pipe plugs.

Not sure why they are there, you say they are in the exhaust manifold? If so, that would not have prevented it from starting.

If they are in the intake, yes it would have run bad, possibly not started.

After you retorqued the head, did you check the valve clearance? Always a good idea after putting one back together, after the initial run.

Are you asking about hand cranking?

Yes, IF you have sufficient battery to fire the coil. But if the battery is discharged, down below 9-10 volts, there will not be enough to make a spark.

Also battery ignition does not have start timing retard as a mag does. Be careful of kick back!

If the advance weights are working the way they should be & the timing is set right, there should be no kickback. I started my super C many times with a crank when it was cold. Use all the battery power for the coil & they will fire up when it is so cold you don't want to be on them.

Exhaust manifold bolt holes on super A? Maybe a old A manifold for the 'exhaust' lift that was used before the hydraulics became standard? Or some kind of heating chamber for intake manifold when using distillate fuels? Various possible uses, maybe just something to drive people crazy. Perhaps a warning plate- something like Warning, Hot Surface. Teasing Alert! RN

2 small holes? About 1/8" or smaller? Those are to provide an escape for water from condensation. Do not plug them. Your old manifold had those holes also, but probably plugged solid with carbon and rust.

I did relash valves hot. Think I did .15 cold .13. hot.

I am not planning on hand cranking. Just wondering if it was possible. I don't have a crank but I would like to get one to have in the holder.

Something I came up with as I did not find correct procedures online. I am sure others want to know. Does this look good to those of you who have done so?
