Calf bloating

Have a heifer calf about 500lbs seems to have bloating or stopped up maybe, has anyone given mineral oil with tube? I was wondering how much to put in her.

I never used the mineral oil method. I have put a hose down to vent off the pressure and this is what I have seen the vet do. I would watch her closely from now on. In my experience some become bloat prone for life after the first bloat.

Acorns are falling in my area and its a huge crop they'll stop up cattle and kill them don't know if you have any Oak trees in your pastures or not.

Had a 4-H steer that would bloat up from time to time usually the morning of a show. A well respected showman told me to throw a pound of butter in to my tack box for this issue. The butter was easy to get in to the animal but you would be advised to stand to the side as its effect could be fast and somewhat explosive. No tube to mess around with.

We put a needle in the side of the cow and pierce the stomach. We have put a stint (small tube that stays open) if the bloating is reoccurring but only had to do that on one animal and it tends to plug up. Lets the pressure right out. We have had issues with the hose if the bloating was in a harder to reach compartment of the stomach and the hose wouldn't work.

Ginger with water will help with the bloating also if you use a hoes you should put something over it like a pipe so they don't cut the hose off and lose it down the throat. This came from our vet at the time. I have used the hose deal several times for that also used the ginger after the hose to help with keeping it down.

The tube goes in so quick and easy and you can't hurt her with the mineral oil. It is a no brainer.

I had a steer once I put a hose in. He chewed it to pieces and I suddenly stood with the short end in my hand as he started swallowing the rest. Had to stick my hand down his throat and grab it.
The reason for the bloating was that the grain I feed them was ground too fine. After I replaced the grinder with a roller I have never had the problem.
