Finally got to cut some Grain

Here it is almost mid September, and the rain has stopped for a few days, and the grain , which has been slow to ripen , is now ready. Swathed some today, and will cut more tomorrow. Considering that this field couldn't be sprayed because of rain everyday, or the ground just being too wet to travel on, this crop of grain is surprisingly clean, and looks like a decent crop of straw. Hard to tell how the grain will weight, I can just feed IT to young stock if it is light.

Do you use it for cow feed then? My neighbor planted oats and was going to cut them for hay but got wet and he combined them. He gave me close to a hundred bushel just to get rid of them.

Yes you can use them for feed for cows, but I usually buy prepared feed for the dairy cows in a balanced ration .The local feed mill here makes a lot of dairy goat ration , and it seems to be a greatly desired input for goat ration. The feed mill is paying $200.00 per metric ton.

I ground some in with the chicken feed and feed the goats and horses whole oats. When I bring the cows home i.will put some in the mixer. Should I grind them or put them in whole?

Is that a 655 Massey? Dad bought a new 775 MF and we pretty well wore it out. I now have a 1090 NH which is basically the same machine. Macdon built them and White, Massey, NH and Renn all sold them. The tractor is pretty good but the head is a little light especially the pitmam drive.

Looks great Bruce! Looks like a nice catch of hay for next year too. It's gotten wet here too after a long dry spell. Trying to get some wheat straw baled but hard to catch a few dry days. Won't be long and the corn will be ready.

Glad your finally able to get some better weather. We have not had any rain here for two weeks. We have had plenty of rain for most of the season. Some crops on light ground are hurt by the dry weather but the majority is great.

I am like you in being surprised by how clean your oats are. Oats here usually get pretty weedy the later they stand. I would guess the cold/wet not only held back the grain but also the weeds. Most weeds take heat to really grow.

I hope your weather window allows you to get those combines before heavy rains. The straw would be nice to have for your dairy too. Do you shred straw for bedding in your tie stall/stanchion barn??? Lots of the guys around here have a gas powered shredder on wheels they push down the alley and it blows shredded straw where the cows lay. Others have sand for bedding. Lot of the "new" setups use mats/pads for the cows.

No market for oats here. Once every 10 years or so, Quaker will let out oat contracts and everyone grows some. Problem is what to do with production over the contract. Took me two years to finally move the last over contract to oats we grew. Most dairy farmers and Amish grow enough of their own. Ben

The only way we can raise good oats is to plant it very early,,like in February,,which can't happen very often,,some is planted in as a cover crop for hay and baled about when it heads up,,It takes a long cool Spring to get a good crop of Oats with good test weight,,that is why Oats is raised in the upper States..

I had planned to sow oats/peas this spring for sheep/lamb feed. Once the May 24 weekend passed I gave up and planted soys.....about June 14. I was east of you Bruce a week ago was surprised at the amount of cereals out yet. Here we had about an inch of rain in August. I would love to have 10t of that mixed grain!
