Irma.......

Is anyone in the way of Hurricane Irma? Looks like Florida is going to get whacked.

We have a niece and husband living in West Palm Beach. They're both pilots and own a Comanche 180, so they scrammed up to Augusta, GA a couple of days ago. Guess they picked Augusta 'cause they used to live there. They can scram somewhere else if need be.

Now it looks like Irma is heading up the west coast of Florida. One of my old Marine Corps buddies lives in Bradenton, FL, by Tampa, and with the current predicted path the eye will go right over the top of him. I emailed him and wished him luck, but I haven't heard back.

Old Scovy and FLOLDFORD are hunkered down and staying, don't know if anybody else is or not.

Have everything pick up or tied down. Shop is so full you can't hardly walk in the door. I think Jack headed to a shelter which is the right thing for him and his wife to do. I'll ride it out and hope for the best but I have prepared for the worst. Biggest thing we could be without power for quite some time. I have generators but fuel is going to be a problem. This is going to be a bad one!

My oldest friend from school (1951 in grade one) lives in Fort Myers ..... he's hunkered down at home. Had a cigar and a Canadian Club out in his back yard this afternoon in preparation for the big blow. I'm hoping things go well for him and his wife, keeping my fingers crossed.

The next 24 hours will be critical as to who gets hit.
They keep predicting a turn to the north but keep moving that turn farther west as the days pass.
For the past 3 hours it has been moving due west.

Sep 09 20:00 GMT 23.3? -80.4?
Sep 09 21:00 GMT 23.4? -80.5?
Sep 09 22:00 GMT 23.4? -80.7?
Sep 09 23:00 GMT 23.4? -80.8?

On its past course for several days it is headed straight for corpus christi texas.
So the entire gulf coast is still game on until it makes the turn toward land.

All my relatives have left Fla.
Nieces went to their dads house in Atlanta
My son came here to my house.

Got a text from my daughter who lives in Miami and she got out Friday. Should be safe, she went to Italy.

My sister lives in Leesburg on a lake. She went to a best western. Said they expect 85 mpg winds. If she gets major damage, I'll probably be paying her a visit.

Sadly my next load puts me in atlanta Monday and Tuesday. Not sure yet whether it will go or not.

One of my best buddies just got into Florida today. Left Michigan 3 days ago, with a hundred some line trucks to get power back asap. So hopefully foldford won't be outta business for too long. ;)

Said they might be staying in tents in orlanda until it hits. Don't that sound like fun...

From home it's a bit less than 1200 miles, so 2 days. But I'm picking up in southern In. tomorrow if they still want me to take it. I'll be out of hours when I get there, so I'll have to take a day off there on Monday. My load doesn't deliver til tuesday.

I was wondering about the power companies work sharing costs. Seems there is a national organization that a company joins and when there is an emergency, they contact the agency and the agency sends out the request to other companies. It's a volunteer "buddy help" program and best I can tell the assisting power company foots the bill for it's crews. I think it was the Weather Channel yesterday that said there are 16,000 crews with their trucks and other equipment in Florida ready to go to work.

I know we had folks from as far away as New York assisting in Houston. I also know that Texas crews are down in Florida.

So, it seems it's part of our light bill to fund such. That's OKFINE with me!

(quoted from post at 20:18:41 09/09/17) I'm in Wauchula which is 30 miles east of the eye path as of right now, going to ride it out.

How do you know that it won't ride you under? "Ride it out" sounds like a putt putt around a lake in a 10 MPH breeze.

I have been a part of the restoration efforts in hurricanes in the past with Dominion Energy in other states. Our crewes are standing by for the support that will be sore badley needed in the days and weeks ahead. we pray that they work safe ,and return to loved ones.CM

Sister lives in Naples. They are "rideing it out". Will hit at high tide. Praying for the best. Last I heard this morning they lost power.

My folks are 83 and 81. They are in englewood, and they are riding it out. I just talked to my dad and he was getting irritated by me and my siblings concerns. He is 100 ft from Lemon bay, and won't leave. I personally think he is trying to justify a bad decision, but there is nothing I can do. The local police will do a wellness check after the storm. They have pulled all their guys back to safety. I talked to the police, they say they cannot force them out, and cannot send anyone there now anyway. I'm praying, and for the 1st time here, asking for your prayers.

Thanks.

My Aunt and Uncle live in Panama City Beach Florida, about 3-4 days ago they decided they should go visit their Daughter in Bowling Green Kentucky, mentioned they may go home in a week or so. Heck they're retired it was probably a good plan to get the heck out of Dodge before anything interesting happened

Spook- "I'm praying, and for the 1st time here, asking for
your prayers.".

I'll pray for your family but, aren't you one of the first
ones to admonish others for believing in a 'higher'
being?...My thoughts of you are kinda like there are 'no
atheists in a foxhole' type thing??

I'm sorry, but I think you are mistaken. I am a lot of things, but not a atheist. If it matters, I go to the local UB church. I don't post here much, I try to stay away from the politics, I remember when a bunch of folks got kicked off here, some folks really get nasty. I have never been banned anywhere or even warned.

The weirdest thing I've seen here was the IDF saga. Or maybe that was tales.

I've talked to my folks about a hour ago, they are ok so far.

Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts. We all need more of both, I suppose.

Mom, two sisters, three brothers, a niece and an assortment of cousins live in Venice, Sarasota and Tampa area. All in the direct path of Irma. Have not heard from them in several hours.
