Replacing hydraulic cylinder seals

Working on replacing cylinder seals on the new loader I bought but having getting the expansion ring out has troubled. Looked like a flat screwdriver would peak the keeper ring out but so far no avail. Any tricks or does this need a special tool?

If it is moving around as you use the screw driver on it, you will need to hold the opposite side fixed to get it started. I would use a pair of long nose vise grips, to
clamp it stationary. Jim

2 small flat blade screw drivers, 1 in each end or a pair of snap ring pliers. I would move the ring around some to loosen up the rust, might help it come out easier. A set of picks will make it much easier to remove and install the o rings & wiper rings.

First soak the whole area in
penetrating oil. If the ring isn't
moving at all, use a hammer and punch
to tap on the ring all the way around.
This goes a long way toward freeing it
up in the groove.

Once the ring is free, use a thin
screwdriver to get behind one end of
the ring and pry it out enough to get
a larger screwdriver behind it at a
point further from the end.

Sometimes it has taken me a third, but
usually when you get it going like
this you can then use the two
screwdrivers to work it on out of the
groove.

Once you get it out, use a hammer and
brass punch to knock on the gland
itself to free it up. The way it looks
I'd almost bet it's going to be a
royal PITA to get out.

If so, pull on the rod with a come
along and tap on the OF of the
cylinder until it comes out.

Good luck.

Just beg, borrow, or steal a set of snap ring pliers. They aren't expensive. They aren't used very often but they will help you get to a ripe old age without developing ulcers. I speak from many years of experience.

And you won't be messing up the snap ring either.

I had one like that one time and I drilled a small hole in the barrel so it would hit the snap ring groove so I could get a 1/8 inch pin punch in the hole. Tap the snap ring around so it is over the hole and then use a punch & hammer to move the snap ring while an assistant gets a screw driver behind it. When you get the snap ring out grind a small bevel on the ring to help get a screw driver behind it if you ever need to do it again. My 2 cents worth. J.
