voltage regulator

Only a Generator is Polarized, the regulator is neither affected, nor able to be polarized. Engine off Jim

Correct. Remember with the engine OFF. You only want to FLASH it. Just enough to get a really big pop of a spark. Now going down another path that is pretty close. If you have a really old portable generator and it will not generate. Most likely it has lost its polarization. Plug in a good old fasion hand drill that has brushes in it. You always smell a little Ozone when you use it. With the generator running pull the trigger on the drill and give the chuck a couple of fast twists. SHAAM. The generator should start working.

It is not necessary to polarize after disconnecting the battery. The cutout relay disconnects the battery every time you shut off the tractor.

The magnetism in the iron of the field poles is what gets "polarized" Iron for the pole pieces is soft mild steel (not cast iron, which is a different animal) the flashing of the armature to Bat terminals gives the field windings a burst of full magnetism that remains in the iron because the magnetic "spin"of the atoms become aligned. The field terminal must be attached to a good regulator, or grounded for polarization to work. The magnetic field can last years with little deterioration. (I have started vehicles, or reused a shelf stored generators that have set for 20 years that needed no polarization to get to work) If they were polarized the opposite way, yes. Jim
