I do not post much but really enjoy this site. I have a MF135D, M farmall and aJD H. I do not use the JD so thinking of trading it for a farmall A or B with a belly mower. Any thoughts as to which would be better with a mower. I do not farm just garden and such on 20 acres. Around here the JD will bring more but thought the A or B would be better for mowing. Will the front end of the B lay the grass down too much? Any comments will be appreciated

I'm a Farmall guy, but I think a JD H would make a great little mower. I used to mow with a Farmall A and it did fine, three blade 5 ft mower, but blade speed seemed a little low. Never mowed with a B but they steer like a dream.

The front end of the B will not lay down the grass too much. I mowed for several years using a Farmall H with a narrow front, and a Woods belly mower. Never a problem with smashing down the grass.

I have a Super A with a woods L59 mower. I use it for grass and weeds that are about a foot tall with no problems. The mower also mows the width of the tractor. I also have a Farmall A and I believe it would work as well, maybe not as fast. Good Luck

Gardening With an offset super A tractor is really nice. It has power, and hydraulics. Use a pull behind mower, and the Tractor will serve 2 purposes. Jim

I'm a John Deere guy, but I have a B Farmal with a 60" belly mower and it works great, I removed the left axle tube and bolted the final drive back onto the trans case, put an "A" axle in it and that narrowed it up to match the mower, the tricycle front end lets it steer nice, it has plenty of power and I mow in second gear, a nice speed to work in. I run the belt off the belt pulley drive.I also adapted a pair of 24" semi tires to it for a nice turf tread,,I have some pics some where but I can't find now,Darn it...it is a very functional machine. I have made mowers out of M John Deere's but they don't work out as well.

When I taught ag mechanics we installed a number of belly mowers. The most popular tractor for that was either an A or a Super A Farmall. In second place was the Allis Chalmers B.

I mow with an 8N Ford and a 3pt hitch 6ft finish mower. I mow in 3rd gear. Works fine and easy to take the mower off if you want to use the tractor for something else.

Either will be fine, we have both. Whatever you do, don't get a Farmall Cub.....way too weak.

Awwww. I won't tell my 14 year old his Cub is too weak. Lol. He loves it. Cuts our grass and a couple empty lots on our road. Sharp blades ,no hurry,no worries!

i like my allis C with a L306 woods 6' belly mower. mow in 1st but would probly handle 2nd, still does yard in 1st gear at half the time the john deere 212 used to. just takes up more shed space. the tricycle front end and good brakes make for a tight turns. wasnt too bad a price at 1400.

A, B and BN (B narrow) have the same base engine.
The main difference, other than the wide front end on the A's,
is the width of the rear end. A "B" takes up a lot of space and will
need a wider mower to cover the tracks. A BN is 8 inches narrower.
The A about a foot if I recall correctly. Most parts are interchangeable.

My current BN has a Super A engine in it. Still the same HP I think.
I still have a Cub and a BN. Sold the other three BN's, two A's and
both B's. I mowed for years with my cub. A 5 foot belly mower was
all it could handle, and too much at times. None of them have live
PTO so getting the mower and the tractor going at the same time
takes some practice and planning to get it all working right.
Second nature, like driving a stick shift, once you get used to it.

Then I bought a zero turn rider. Cut my mowing time to 1/4 of
what it was, takes 1/8 the gas and leaves the lawn looking better.

I've seen the asking price for JD H around $5K. Selling it will allow you to buy a couple IH tractors.

I like a tricycle tractor over a wide front end. I have both with 6 ft finish mowers. Don't see any difference in front wheels compacting grass. A rear mount mower will leave grass more uncut grass when you turn than will a belly mower.

I have a Farmall C with a 6 ft belly and a Jubilee with a 6 ft rear finish mower. I think the Farmall C is an ideal zero turn mower. I use it to push snow, pull a 10k dump trailer and a 5K lawn roller. I don't think a A or B would work well for me because I do more than mowing. I also love the smooth ride.

I would go with the Farmall M. Here is why. A 90 inch finish mower is perfect behind an M. I use a Land Pride 35-90. You may not have a 3 point hitch on your M. You do not need one. Bolt a 4 x 4 piece of angle iron under the drawbar. Weld 2 lift arm ends to the angle iron, hook up and mow. You have no lift ability, but it will mow great. I mowed this way for approx. 20 years.
