drive shaft clanging

the baler

good morning out there, ive recently had a loud clanking noise in what seems to be coming from the drive shaft
on my SAME explorer 90, this noise is only occouring when im traveling between fields out of four wheel drive,
and at speeds greater than 1500 rpm. ive removed the protective shield and dont feel any obvious play in the
shaft, although the clearance is pretty close on the oil pan it does not seem 'loose' as soon as i engage 4wd it
stops, the drive shaft connects front and back with splined couplers appearing to be scituated with roll pins to
hold in place, any insite would be appreciated
thanks

Usually when you engage 4wd the front pulls so it takes the strain off the rear. when you check for ujoint looseness the vehicle needs to be in neutral chocked or park brake set. Sounds like a u joint or ring and pinion.

I suggest that you safely park the tractor on a flat surface, jack up one front wheel and have someone rock that wheel back and forth while you check the U-joints and slip joint etc. I have found that is a better way to find a bad U-joint than trying to turn the driveshaft with the wheels on the ground.

I can not find a 1990 ford explorer till you show me one I say they don't exist.... 1991 were the first model...

The original rear shaft was a Constant Velocity Joint style and very problematic... I have seen them look and check GOOD but still be a problem... One key tip off is a rumble on acceleration and clears up at cruise as soon as the pinion angle stabilized... We did not repair them we replaced the shaft with a standard U-joint replacement shaft...
