Swathing Oats

I was swathing oats the day of the solar eclipse so decided to shoot some video with the Gopro in case there was anything worth recording. Nothing visible as far as the amount of sunlight but the scenery was nice. I've since combined the oats and they are in the bin dry. A bit on the light side which is not too surprising considering the dry growing season.

Nice. Thank you. How large a swather? I'll guess 20 something ft. I really liked to swath when I was a teenager on the farm in North Dakota. But never had one with a cab !! 12 ft pull type JD. Also ran a 12 ft pull type Case for an uncle and a 16 ft pull type JD for a neighbor. The 16 ft JD was pulled by a Farmall "M" and was a joy to run.

This JD Macdon is a 21 foot cut with the double swath table so I can lay two swaths side by side for 42 feet. Yes, the cab makes life a lot more pleasant in all weather. Believe me, I know what its like working out in the open. I spent many years on an open swather at the mercy of whatever weather happened to be in effect at the time. I either froze or suffered the heat. Wind, dust, insects, I don't miss that one bit.

(quoted from post at 06:53:18 09/05/17) What is the advantage of swathing versus just combining directly?
Biggest advantage is swathing allows earlier harvest. Those green oats (or wheat) might take a long time to ripen enough to be safe in the bin. Swath them and in this heat they are dry in 4 or 5 days. I've got a field of wheat down that I think is about ready to go. The fields still standing I know there are green patches. It might be ok but might take another week standing to be dry.
Of course I could do like some and dessicate with glyphosate but I won't do that.
