Internet security

This is what my desktop screen looks like this morning.

Now I get to decide if I want to renew this or try something else.
It's $60 a year for 2 or more years.
Have had no issues over the past 2 years with it but things are always changing.

What do you guys use?

I always run Advast free when i run windows. Never had a problem. I have run Linux for the last 10 years and wont go back.

John in La,

We've used Kaspersky at work since last year. We really like it.

Formerly used Norton, then AVG... like Kaspersky the best. Have not had any issues while using Kaspersky, and the updates seem quick. Also the scan does not seem to bog down the computer as much as with some other brands of antivirus software.

My son, the IT tech, installed BitDefender on all our machines, both Mac and PC. Our main desktop is Mac, so fewer issues than most PCs, but this security program is very inconspicuous. He chose it, and he would have to deal with the ramifications of any issues (his payment for 21 years of room and board).

Windows has one called defender. its free. I have used it for couple years no with no problems. Norton tried to charge me 89 dollars so I saved that money although if I had to buy one I think P C Matic would be my choice..

We switched to an Apple Mac (ours is a Mac Mini), along with iPads (using one typing this reply) and iPhones.

Nothing is perfect, but I no longer wrestle with virus software.

Also - I've read the built-in virus protection built into Microsoft's Windows 10 is sufficient. Unless you are surfing websites you shouldn't be on, probably won't have an issue.

YMMV

Bill

Microsoft's Security Essentials is as good or better than any third party application, and it's free.

Also make sure both your computer and your router have firewalls turned on and good (not default) passwords.
Security Essentials

I use McAffee but I'm not thrilled with it. They have a tendency of spamming you to death. Blocks others well but their stuff drives me nut's. Turn it off and the next time it updates you get spammed again. My son has the Kapersky and loves it so I may give it a try in a few month's when mine is due to renew at a much higher price. I'm like you when it comes for free. I figure you get your money's worth and no more!

My DIL uses that program on the farm computer. She likes it over Norton.

I willingly pay for the security programs. Yes Window defender and others are free BUT you have to make sure they are kept updated. They do not totally do it automatically. I am not a computer geek so I worried about keeping thinks updated with those. So I have been using Norton for close 15 years now. I have had zero issues with some one getting in my computer. I have had some performance issues with Norton running too much in the back ground. I found it usually was simple setting to change to make it work well enough for me.

I have the free version of Malewarebytes for manually checking for maleware now and then, but also just renewed my subscription with Norton. Paid $60 per year, and the subscription covers 5 devices, including the wife's smart phone. I almost went with Kapersky, as it seems the reviews I saw gave it a slight edge over Norton, but Norton was a better value for me, plus I'm already familiar with it.

Many of these programs now are saying that you no longer need to have multiple programs, like an antivirus AND a maleware program, but I'm keeping both just in case. Also, I have uBlock Origin that also adds a small amount of security.

Kaspersky is a Russian company that has been linked to a lot of hacking. Just check it out.

I bought an Apple computer and have had no additional security installed. They assured me that Apple computers will not get viruses. For the past 3 years they have been correct.

I have 1 computer with windows XP that I use Avast on and have not had any problem with virus since putting it on, it self updates every time it is on line. Can't say the same for McaFee as I had stuff get by it and Norton was too much of a hog, it slowed the computer to a crawl.
My other 3 computers have Linux Mint, great OS and no virus problems.

(quoted from post at 09:33:39 09/03/17) My wife uses windows defender or her computer.
She tells me to just use it also.
Just something about free that makes me think cheaply made.
And I have all our personal stuff on my computer so I want the best even if I have to pay for it.

So why would you not do what your wife suggests?

My IT professional tells me that the Windows free system is as good as any and better than most and I've had no problems. I have one computer not connected to the internet which still has AVG free. It keeps telling me how many threats it saved me from :) Did I say the computer is not connected to the internet? LOL

I personally use Trend Micro. Formerly used Norton. I would NEVER touch Norton again. When it expired, it pretty much trashed my operating system. Left all kinds of leftovers in place that would nag me to renew. I finally reformatted and re-installed my Windows to get rid of it.
Also, I would like to note that saying that Apple products do not get viruses is simply not true. If you have no protection and have not gotten a virus yet, you have been extremely lucky. I know a few people in IT positions, and they will gladly tell you how "immune" that Apple is.

I too have an Apple. They frequently supply updates to counter known threats. The operating system is contained within the computer (so I'm told) and is not susceptible to outside hacking like Windows systems. It pretty much is a stand alone system.
