Anyone know anything good or bad about Massey Ferguson 698 for a backup loader tractor. Posted on MF forum, 71 views and no response?

I know of people that had 699 which is maybe the same tractor only with the 6cyl 354 and loved them. Looks like the 698 has the 318 4cyl,we had one in a 1085 and had a lot of engine issues ,that being said we worked it very hard and it couldn't hold up. If the engine is good now and your only doing loader and maybe medium load tillage or pto work I expect you'd be fine.

Thanks Phillip. Did you have any head gasket issues? I did find some discussion with some people having issues and maybe MF did an update on later 318 engines.

We really should have at the time gotten an 1105. We pulled 40 plate disks every spring over 200 acres 16' harrows 5 sod plow and the worst was the forage harvester. We basically every year replaced the head gasket and every second year piston rings too. The 3 spd transmission and multi power gave us a lot of grief too in the 1085. But a neighbour also had a 1085 didn't work it near as hard as we did never had problems. If it's cheap enough and you don't need 88 hp (ours was turned up to 100 at one time) you'd have way less problems if a good diesel mechanic could turn it down to 65-70 hp. Way less likely to blow itself apart.

Again thanks for the great feedback. You guys certainly did work those MF's hard but you got to do what is needed to get the job done. I've worked a lot of John Deere and International tractors hard but never had to replace any head gaskets but most are not turned up on the pump. Did have to replace a couple of clutches and T/A on the IH-3588 but that is not uncommon. Only head gasket problem was with a NorthStar engine in my Cadillac and they were notorious for the head bolts stretching in the aluminum heads. The MF 698 has a front end loader and only 1100 hrs and looks great but I haven't talked to the owner yet. He wants 18k for it but I was thinking of offering him something in the 15K arena if all systems check out good. I'll keep looking for other tractors that are a little older that I know how to work on. Guy has a JD 4230 that needs a little work and another has a 71 JD 4020D that would also be about what I need. Not in a hurry, so I will keep looking and checking out local farm sales.

No problem at all and best of luck either way. We might have just had a lemon and we were too hard on it but we certainly ended up with our fair share of troubles. 18k sounds a little on the high side but if it's in very good condition and only has 1100 hours on it certainly worth a look especially if it's 4wd.
