Using a deep cycle batt. in tracror

The battery in my Farmall 300 is toast. It's been weak for a
while. I have a dual purpose battery from Napa. Says it's
designed for heavy duty starting and mod rate deep cycle
service. It will fit in my 300. Any reasons why I shouldn't ?

No reason you shouldn't use the deep cycle on a tractor and it might be a good idea if you let tractor sit un-used for weeks without a maintainer hooked up.

Well it's in. Tractor always charged perfect till a few weeks ago. I checked and cleaned all the connections still.a no go with the old battery. Put it on the charger and it would start once. Put new one in and everything is good ! Had to give it a shot ! This idea might carry to a few others that are on the edge!

Sure it will still work. However a Deep Cycle is different then a starting battery in several ways and each is designed for a certain purpose.......... They also make a so called RV Marine that's sort of a hybrid to start a big marine engine (starting battery application) then operate the trolling motor (deep cycle application)

Your 300's engine is around 175 CID four cylinder with maybe 7 to one compression? A 105 Amp-Hr deep cycle battery would be over kill, but it should have no trouble starting that engine.

Reason why
Cost. I've never gotten more than 30 months out of a so called marine battery on my dump trailer. I use 2 catr batteries instead. I'll never buy another Marine battery again. A friend use a marine battery for his boat because he fishes in a small lake , no outboard allowed
He can't get three years out of marine.

Hello 300jk,

You got a heavy duty starting battery. You need to use is as a starting battery. it will fit the application. Well..............go for it!

Guido.

Hello John T,

He said that it is a heavy duty starting battery. So what is the problem? He wants to use as designed,

Guido.

I thought he said "Says it's designed for heavy duty starting and mod rate deep cycle service."

That description sounds sort of like a modified (starting plus deep cycle) battery to me but hey WE AGREE it should still work okay.......

I used to fish and use trolling motor batteries. Back then they were not dual purpose. Some years ago I bought a 1960's vintage JD 4010, 70ish hp, 6 cyl 380 or so cu in. diesel. In the single battery box scabbed onto the side of the main frame sat a size 27 deep cycle battery and from the looks of it well worn. I don't remember exactly but roughly 2 years later I replaced it. Was truly amazed.

Hello John T,

Yep! His post was two sided but you are right. I told then to go fir it. And reading the whole thread I saw were he said the battery was already installed? I guess we were both right...

Guido.

If were both right is it because great minds think alike orrrrrrrrr even a blind squirrel finds a nut now n then LOL

You don't have to answer that !!!!!!!!

Also wanted to add I had the old one out and was going to install the new battery. Before I got any responses I just put it in. Was not installed before I made the original post. Just wanted to be clear that's all.
