Thanks for the info for repair of these. Some help from folks here and some from videos.

The M8 by 1.25 tap didn't do the job for the steering wheel puller. I finally drilled out and tapped for 3/8 by 16.

Got it all apart and one photo shows the basic problem. I should have started with lock cylinder and may not have needed to dig deeper. The ignition actuator is not broke, but the gear mechanism shows considerable wear at the end that provides the final push to engage the starter as shown in the other photo. The mating gear doesn't show any wear - possibly replaced by PO.

Glad I did dig deeper though because the left turn signal has had a problem for awhile in that it needed to be held while turning. It would not lock as some of the plastic is broken away. While all is apart I'll replace the turn signal switch also.
Going to need lots of patience to get this all back together. Any suggestions on where to get the best parts and prices?

I had a '94 F-150. I think I had the entire switch replaced on a recall. Maybe try the Ford dealer. Sometimes dealers are okay...sometimes...
