Our daughter emailed us twice from Singapore yesterday. The trip is vacation for her and business for her travel partner.

She lives in Omaha now, but a couple of months ago she was talking with an old friend, and attorney she once worked with in Washington DC. During the conversation, he said, "BTW, I have to go to Hong Kong and Singapore in August. Want to go along?"

She said, "Sure, why not?". They had a 16 hour, non-stop flight from Chicago to Hong Kong, then on to Singapore. After a few days in Singapore, they'll go back to Hong Kong for a few more days. Then back to Chicago.

She and I are about tied, going west. I've been in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Okinawa, and Wake Island. She's been in Japan and South Korea, and now Hong Kong and Singapore.

I have her beat going east. The only place she's been in Europe is Germany. I've been in Gibraltar, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and the islands of Sardinia and Palma.

My wife has never been outside of CONUS.

The opportunity to see first hand the lives and activities that make the world tick is fantastic. Very important as we enter an era of awareness of our responsibilities as a planet. Jim

Good for her. It amazes me how anyone can sit jammed in those tiny seats inside an aluminum tube for so many hours without going bonkers. I can barely sit in my Lazy Boy long enough to watch a short movie.

I have traveled outside the US. There are few places I would travel anymore. Mainly due to personal safety concerns. While we complain about the US we are in general very safe here. Canada, the majority of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, plus a few more would be as safe as we are here. Too many other places are not even half as safe. Some you would have to be totally crazy to visit.

They lucked out and got a free upgrade to seats that were roomy and comfortable.

True. When you walk down a street in a small town in a different country and notice the sewer line is a partially covered ditch beside the street, the good old USA looks pretty good.

Although Amy confirmed what I'd already heard, Singapore, as an entity, is known for being spotlessly clean.

If that were true then the developed nations of the world would have the responsibility to conquer the undeveloped nations because that is the only way they will ever become developed. India is a prime example. A system were a few get rich and their poor makes our poor look wealthy. The only way to end the graft and corruption there would be for someone to conquer them and either annex them or occupy them long enough to get a handle on the situation. You can include all of South America, Mexico, all of Africa, most of the middle east and most of Asia.

It's a fantastic opportunity to educate yourself about other people, their culture and way of life. You will find however that people in general are much the same. They want food, shelter and clothing. They want TVs, cars and their own homes.

That was the sewer situation in Costa Rica, which is actually one of the safer Central American countries to go to. And the papers and litter in the street blew up the street in the morning, and back down in the evening. I swear we were seeing the same papers day after day. No budget for cleanup, I guess.

But the people were nice. The waiter in the hotel restaurant and I knew just enough of each other's language to communicate. I came up with a combination of stuff I wanted for breakfast, and he called it the Miguel Especiale. Called it out to the cook as soon as I walked in, so it would be ready quicker. And it worked, from his standpoint- his tips from me were excellent.

I think they come down pretty hard on muggers, because they realize tourists are their bread and butter, and don't want to get a bad reputation.

Isn't that where if you get caught chewing GUM they will throw your butt in jail? Remember that stupid spoiled kid that got caught keying cars. Punishment was to be caned with a bamboo rod. Supposed to rip your back up almost as good as a whip.

Come to think of it, I do think she mentioned something about chewing gum being banned.
