My first time running combine was the fall after my dad died 1984. I did a lot of firsts that year.
wish he was still around,

phillip ,, where is this ? ,is that wheat your son is runnin with the 550? ,30 yrs ago. my son wasriding along with me in the300 massey at age 7 ,./ i would let him take the wheel in a 40 acre wheat field ,. he did good , and he still will run the combine

Remember, the rule of thumb is if you operate it, you maintain it.Good to see a young fellow take an interest in the farm. Ben.

Great rule ,we took turns cutting today,he doesn't have his truck license yet so he filled and hauled the trailer behind the tractor and I filled and hauled with the tandem truck

Thank you,he did alright, got into some clay one trip but dug it out by himself when I was gone. We bought this one near 15 years ago now after our 410 gas burnt

Yup me too,he did most of the combining here and all the plowing too. I wish my dad was sill around too,we got long pretty well most of the time

I was running a #25 combine pulled by a 60 when I was 12,,the sound of that old 2cylinder PTO whining is still music to my ears...

That is great to see the next generation starting to run equipment. Have not owned a combine for about 25 years since I have very little acreage of wheat and milo so I run a combine for my son each year (we run two machines) and he cuts my stuff. Couple of years ago son told me "get Zane (grandson) in there and teach him how to operate it. He was only 13 at the time but very savvy about equipment as he was already swathing, round baling, raking, etc. So after a couple of hours behind the wheel each day for a few days we finished and then the next year repeated the process but eventually let him "solo" and he has done great since with very few mishaps. I didn't run a combine when I was young as I was the truck driver since age 14, which was legal back in the 50's. But when I was about 16 or so started running a JD 55 as dad bought a second 55 and I had younger brothers who could do the truck driving. Bought my first combine, a 1959 JD 95 with 16' header in 1968. I think there is a little sage advice in what Patton (I think it was him???) told his leaders: "Don't tell the troops how to do things, tell them what needs to be done and they will surprise you with their ingenuity" (or something to that effect).

How was the barley yield over there? Not much over 1.25/ac here... At least it's standing good, but the dry weather really kicked the crap out of it.
