have 2010 deere diesel ,will'nt start , off the starter , turns over well , but chain on it , starts with in a few feet . thanks

The starter isn't turning fast enough.Could be the starter itself is worn and in need of a rebuild.Or the battery cables/connetions are dirty or corroded, not allowing full voltage to flow.Or maybe the engine is worn enough(low compression) that just the starter alone cant get enough speed to build enough heat to ignite the fuel.Check the easy stuff first

Since it's a diesel, obviously there's not a low ignition voltage during cranking issue like a gasser can have, so it boils down to cranking speed, obviously faster when pull-started.

It COULD be an injection pump head and rotor wear issue, or poor compression issue if it requires faster than normal cranking to start.

On the other hand, those engines are a pre-chamber diesel and typically need to have the glow plugs used for the first start of the day, even in warm weather.

Are your glow plugs working, and are you using them properly?
