Came across this video from 1917 Dodge Bros. manufacturing plant.

Shows some good video of gear cutting, forging, steel stamping. Really amazing the equipment they had, all shaft and belt driven, heavy duty stuff.

Very labor intensive, no safety police! Reaching into the presses without stopping, cleaning the body with gasoline before painting...

We've come a long way!

About 10 years ago, I worked for a manufacturing company that was founded in the 1870s. During their peak employment, they had about 600-700 people on the payroll.
Anyway, I happened to see one of their brochures from that era that bragged that they had 11 full-time nurses on hand.
Okay....a nurse is there to help people get back to full health. Now I'm sure there were a lot of workplace accidents, but did they have to brag about all the people that were getting hurt while they were making their products?

I doubt they had a 20 minute coffee brake in the morning, and afternoon. If I was buying one of the cars I would tell the salesman I wanted one that didn't smoke. Stan
