My other Rantual project

I found this 8ft. KBA disc that had been setting in a barn for the past 15 years, I cleaned it up to show with my 60's. Since I have done about all you can do with the tractor, I am going to put some equipment together with it to show with them.

I applaud your creativity. I wouldn't have considered the project. But we are who we are as others are who they are. Nice job.

You remind me of my uncle. As a kid I loved going to his place. Always something in the barn for a kid to see. I like the drying rack.

Tim you did very nice restore job on the KBA.

I always hated a KBA disk. They ridged the ground badly if everything was just not perfectly set. My Grand Dad disk a field with one and we had to harrow it twice cross ways to get it back level enough to plant it to hay.

JD basically took a drag disk and put a lift frame on it. When they get worn they flop around and do not do a very good job.

Tim where will you be setup at the Show??? I plan on being there Friday and Saturday. I have never been there before.

I have an 8 foot J.D. disc just like that one. If you'd like a little more practice you're more than welcome to come on over. No barley pops but lots of coffee. (Not allowed to have any alcohol with the meds I'm on but you can if you want. I'd even put you up for the night LOL. Seriously, that looks like a new disc now.

You mean that you found a KBA disc in Ohio that was not owned by the amish. They buy every one that comes up for sale here in WI no matter what size and cut them down. Looks great and makes me want to paint mine up. Tom

I am not sure where we will have our tent, I will be going out on the 23rd. Yes the old KBA's were a different kind of disc, we ran them back then..If you were going to buy a new 60 and disc it would have been a KBA, that is why I wanted one,,a lot of the old ideas were not all that good, like these Slobbery old 60 hydraulic ends, I just unhooked mine and dropped about a pint of oil on the floor, but that's the way it was,, I even put them on my 60C when I built it, even though I don't like them,,and as for this power disc..I can see why it didn't make the cut...

Yes Tom,, this one was hiding out in a barn, most of them went to the scrappers,, as for blasting or painting the disc blades,,I thought about it, but was running out of time,, I'm hoping to get them shined up a bit using it.

Looks very nice, Tim. We had (and still have) several of those over the years. That looks like a later one, the early ones we owned had spoked wheels. One late one we owned had sealed disc bearings, too.

I was curious what you would come up with for implements appropriate for a 60C and 60 MFWD... anything else in the works? CCA cultivator? L or R mAnure spreader? Seems like everyone has a plow, so glad you are doing something different.

Apparently at the very end. I gave that one to a former employee who moved up north and was kind of hobby farming...

Neighbor had one of those back in the 60's, was probably bigger though as we used it behind our 730 JD once and neighbor had an R if I remember correctly. We used it on plowed ground and it worked OK. I can't imagine how many hours you have in restoring that disk as I have recently cleaned up and painted a 34", 12", and 15" wheel and I had many hours in them with cleaning, two coats of primer, and then two coats of JD yellow. You did a great job!!

Tim, bought one that someone had done the same thing to. Looked brand new. Sold it a week later for twice what I paid for it. Sure looks nice.

I have seen them on graigs list from $500-$900...I paid $500 for this one...probably got twice that in it now..but it's still cheaper than a cocaine habit :^)

FROM MEMORY:
Dad bought a new 9 ft. KBA in 1959, but it did not have floating gangs like yours.
He was in a transition time from all two row to four row equipment, and thought
a three row disc would be OK. It was OK but not wonderful, we wound up putting
smaller disc blades on the outside of the rear gangs to stop it from leaving a furrow.

IF the disk your father bought did not have floating disk gangs then it was not a KBA but rather a RWA disk. The RWA disk was a much better disk.

Tim I have to tell you that I have a lot of respect for your abilities and help on this forum.
When I restored cars for myself and others back in the day, - 1970's and 1980's, - my motto was attention to detail at all cost. That satisfied a lot of people. I'm forever grateful because they are still my friends.
You certainly have helped us all with John Deere issues with you knowledge and energy.
I just love seeing old stuff brought back to life.

Tim, this year across the runway east from the JD tent, all kinds of tractors will be parked. No trucks and trailers as well in front of the big hanger. You can unload there but not stay. If I get it right, parking will be off the drive coming into the east gate. I would think that that will fill up fast and not leave much room getting long rigs through. In years past steam engines and trailers were parked across from us, so we will see what happens. There is good concrete to the north but outside the fence and no gate into the show.

It is a lot of fun,I'm about 4 days from seeing this thing spin, I'm rebuidling the gear box now and getting a new set of drive shafts made the go out to the chain boxes, the welding is all done except if I make shaft sheilds, and it looks like I have time for that yet. It's going to be 9 ft.,I I knew the 60's did not want 16 ft.,,9 may be a chalenge..I wanted to match a rolling harrow to it to take the wheel tracks out..
