Here in NJ they just did what they call buying guns.In a few towns they offered money to buy unwanted guns from people. The news said they handed out cash for guns,,no questions asked.Pistols, shotguns,,any kind of gun. Some on the news looked pretty rare and nice to me.They showed a van loaded,,headed to incinerate them all. What do you guys and gals think of this?

Nothing but a publicity stunt. They have gun buybacks here periodically. What they get are mostly guns that have been inherited by family, and old damaged,or obsolete weapons.
Ain't no way Johnny gang banger is going to show up to turn in his weapons.

I would like to see an accurate inventory published on the numbers condition and type of gun that is being turned in.

It has happened in many places, and usually what they end up with is a bunch of damaged, or otherwise non-functioning firearms that are basically junk. It has never had any impact on preventing the street thugs from acquiring a gun.

Definitely a publicity stunt.

In Chicago, I think 12 years ago, a judge turned in a pistol. It recently was confiscated as evidence in a shooting or murder in that city. Don't kid yourself that all of those are destroyed.

They passed legislation that mandated gun turn ins in Australia and since then crime has skyrocketed. Only the good citizens turned their guns in. The criminals kept theirs. Guns prevent crime.

Sounds like a good way to get rid of a murder weapon. Instead of tossing it into a river you can sell it to these people and get paid for it knowing they will destroy it for you.

Here in SJ. The three citys that had a turn in a couple of weeks ago. All slums, all B...., and all Dem. It is nothing but a show and when you see the pictures of everything layed out on a table with the @#$%_&_/ cops standing there. When you see some antiques that a stupid kid turned in after the parents died. You want to scream and as another said you can bet they go home with someone. My country is almost dead.

Melting guns is like killing mosquitoes, there will be plenty more coming along to replace them. Waste of time and money.

No effect. Concept invented by the lefties to console themselves into thinking they're stomping the 'gun nuts'. FOOLS.

They do that on occasion in Canada and it seems all they get is old obsolete and junk hunting rifles, not exactly the M16's and Glocks they are hoping for..... The drive behind it here is trying to get the ww2 bring backs that are now surfacing due to the war generation passing on and they are afraid grandpas luger and mp40 might wind up in the hands of street gangs. Kind of a stretch, but the government does try...

The church in Bergenfield did that a buyer was trying to intercept people to get the rare guns first before they turned them in . Had all permits to purchase as required and the cops made him leave. Sad how much rare stuff gets wasted.

When I see these I'm always reminded of an episode of The Simpsons where there was a rash of officials getting pies thrown in their faces so the police started a pies for guns trade in. Turn in a pie, no questions asked, and get a gun in return.

I can only say this. Sounds like a bunch of stupid people and the Government trying to take away a right we are given in the Constitution.

The only way I will give one single gun to the Government is if they either steal it form me which I have had happen or they kill me. I'll hide and bury my guns and ammo before they will have any of them

I can't add much to what has already been said. It is naive and foolish to think the "bad guys" are going to turn in their functional guns. It's equally naive and foolish for politicians and activists to think passing more gun laws will reduce gun crimes. The bad guys will ignore the new laws just as they ignore existing laws. Think about it -- if someone decides to murder someone, will the would-be murderer say, "Dang, I exchanged my Glock for a gift certificate a few days ago, so I guess I can't kill the SOB," or, "Hey, I'd kill that blanker except I'm not allowed to legally possess a firearm"? It's amazing to think any sentient being can believe buy-backs and anti-2nd laws will stop such crimes.

Same thing will happen to the guns bought as what happens in the police evidence locker. Cops go through them and pick out what they want personally, then they make a show out of driving to the smelter.

Right On rossow ! ! !
All ones needs to do is spend 20 minutes reading up on countries that took guns away from citizens.
crime did not go down ! criminals will; always have their guns.

How is voluntarily selling your guns taking your rights away? When I sell a gun for cash am I still responsible for what the new owner does with it? Didn't we pass a law several years ago that gun manufacturers are not responsible for what owners do with it? Unless you sell a gun to a known criminal, I do not see where your "rights" are taken away.
Your argument makes no sense at all.

In the Midwest, police will accept and destroy any unwanted drugs or guns at anytime, both legal and illicit, to keep them off the streets. The police don't charge any fee or offer any payment for the service, except during the well publicized gun buys.

The cop gun buy back is a trick they have tried to use many times in many places and in many countries that did it, it was the lead to a full gun take away. All one need to do it read history and you will find this is a simple prelude to greater take backs in the future.

The criminals are not going to turn in there gun for any amount of $$ and the stupid people that do not see what is going on disarm them self's.

All one need to do is be a student of history and one will see this is not a good thing. Shoot Hitler made gun registration a law and then went do to door and took over the country and then started a war. The people could not protect them self;s for his S.S.

You are right EXCEPT it is a total waste of public money and it is exploiting a widow who does not know the value of her late husband's evil Winchester 21

this has been going on for years in New York City and Long Island--they offer different amounts depending if its a pistol, shotgun, rifle, assault rifle, etc

I'd still love to have a real definition of an assault rifle since there was only one gun made that was truly named an assault rifle and A Hitler did not like ti so it was very limited production rifle.

Sorry an AK47 or an SKS or AR15 are not assault rifles they are simply semi automatic rifles which can be used as hunting rifles or as a military rifle

Yep only reason Japan did not put troops in the U.S. Mani land was because an Admiral said behind every rock in the U.S. is a rifle and at least 2 men who know how to use them

Only thing a gun law is good for is a bunch of paper the start a fire with. Guns laws only make it harder for those who can own a gun legally to get them but does nothing to stop a criminal form gettign a gun since they do not buy form gun dealers.

Back when I was still in the Navy I was offered a Thompson sub machine gun for $100 but I was told not question asked about it and where it had been and what it had been used for. Thinking back now I probably should have spent the $100 for it and then just made it go poof as in still have it but not let any one know I had it

Larry,
I have mixed feeling about guns, like old tractors, some are destined to the scrap yard. So if a gun is worthless, scrap it.

If the gun is a valuable good working antique and it's scraped out, you can't fix stupid.

If my kids don't want my guns when I'm gone, I won't roll over in grave. I know my kids don't want many of my things, so I hope to get rid of most of them before my time is up simply to make it easier on my kids.

If you want to cry, look up what they did in Australia a while back when they made EVERYONE turn in all their guns (well, nearly everyone). Pics of roll off dumpsters full to the tops with nice old fowling guns etc. headed for the smelters. Owning one there is now almost impossible. very expensive and very regulated. Buy backs are just feel good stunts. Chicago has had a lot of them and look at their crime rate.

What part of "Shall not be infringed" don't you stinking politicians understand? Any law that violates ANY part of the Bill of Rights is an act of Treason. That's how I feel about it.

Actually AK47 was designed as assault rifles from the ground up and were later modified to sell on the US civilian market. That is the original design was capable of fully automatic fire and had a bayonet/bayonet mounting system. The SKS was designed as a cheap to produce combat rifle. The AR was originally designed and sold as a sporting firearm.

Now release the AK with semi auto only and remove the bayonet you have now modified it to a sporting rifle. Same thing with the SKS just remove the bayonet. Take the original AR platform add select fire giving the ability to fire auto, add a bayonet lug and you have modified a sporting rifle into a military assault rifle.

I fail to see how a gun buy back program infringes on any rights. No one makes you sell your guns at one.

I have no idea how many photos I've looked at of cops with guns piled up after a buy back. What I see most often is worn out non functional junk. That alone makes these events just another feel good thing that does absolutely nothing to prevent or reduce crime.

Everyone should know that New York and New Jersey are HOSTILE toward gun owners. They do NOT LIKE people who own guns. I recommend that anyone considering vacationing in these two states to either leave your guns home or consider spending your vacation dollars in a state that will appreciate you guns or no guns.

I agree--the politicians and the news media love to call any gun an assault rifle--it makes headlines and the sorry thing is that society is believing all that crap. my sil semiauto 12G is an assault gun because it has a detachable clip as NY State has determined and put it on the banned list

Well now that we have an across the board conservative majority, repeal of R V wade is a no brainer, right? (All three branches) Never happen, because of the campaign value in 2020, 2024, so on and so on. I, for one , am totally against the procedure. But hypocrisy lives on.

Again goes back to the simple 2nd amendment rights. I remember a staging of a gun and a congress women being asked if it was an assault rifle. Every body but her was in on it. She looked at it and said it was an assault rifle. When it was an AR15 look alike water gun. By the way she was shoot with it and well she was then proven to not know what she was talking about. Nice that Missouri has a lot better laws and we have more gun freedom. Shoot Missouri has Constitutional carry which means I can carry a gun in any way I want at any time
