I Ran The Thresher Today

Hopefully I'll have some video to post when I get time. I was requested to supply the power source for a Case threshing machine today at the threshing demo in town. I used the Cockshutt 50. It was my first time running a thresher and it went well. Never threw the belt or overheated the engine. Although it was over 90 degrees I think.
Got a still picture here while waiting in line for the parade through town to form up this morning. Gopro mounted on the mirror stand on the fender.

What is amazing even with antique equipment. You start throwing those
shocks into the machine and you need four or five men and a couple of
b9ys to keep up. Not even minutely close to today's equipment but
still very impressive none the less. They do that at the Kinzer show
and they only put one at a time in cause they only have one wagon load
for the entire day.

It is indeed amazing how things have changed. A couple days ago I helped pitch bundles into bundle wagons in preparation for our local show. There must have been 15-20 of us out there sweating away. We loaded 25-30 loads in a couple of hours in an area that would have been a couple of easy rounds with a modern combine. The only good thing I could see about pitching those bundles is the camaraderie amongst us and the watermelon afterwards.

Did they have some washtubs in the machine shed filled with ice and beer and soda. Some may call it pop.

Never saw anyone over indulging in too much beer and getting drunk. With the sweating from the heat the alcohol was quickly burned off. Never had more than one bottle per round trip. Yes they were bottles. Long before caned barley pop.

I saw a lot of water bottles and thats all I had myself. There was a big tank of ice cooled beverages of your choice in the rink just beyond the edge of the photo and no doubt it was a popular spot the rest of the day. There were enough interested bystanders to take turns on the pitchforks that I don't think anybody was overworked. Being the "engine man" of course I had to stick around the tractor to make sure everything was running just right.

Looks like a fairly large thresher. 36 or 40 inch cylinder or so?

The general picture of the "bundle wagon" looks quite modern with the flat bed and 6 wheels!

Unfortunately I did not get the details on the size of the Case thresher but you may be right on the size. I'd guess if they had enough guys feeding sheaves from both sides it might have been a load for the 50. Here is the link to the video in case it got buried in another thread.
