There was originally a rod running from that lever to the magneto to adjust the timing, HOWEVER, the factory original mag was an IHC F4, which has been removed at some point and that Fairbanks-Morse installed.

On that I could only guess but I bet Kirk has it right. I know on a lot of the older engine there was a timing adjust thing so as to make it easier to start them with out breaking ones arm in doing so

Ahhh...that's what I was wondering.....not the original one? How costly are these things.....rebuilt? Thanks!

banjoman......."W30 Mag & lever"...made me think you were talkin'bout 30-30 carbine made by Winchester .......easily confuzed Dell

That's an American Bosch magneto, do not know how you would retard spark on that and if the spark cannot be retarded then greater care is required on cranking, as is similar in IHC H-4 magneto, fixed spark!. The original would have been with an IHC F-4 magneto

Been a longtime but I replaced the mag on my 1935 JD B and it cost me around $250 for are built one plus the old one as core. That was back in 2003 give or take a year

ok and thanks... I want to put the F-4 back on it...without the book - do you just unbolt and bolt back or do you have to time this thing?

My W30 has a Fairbanks Morse mag on it and no lever to advance or retard spark and starts and run fine with it.
