I sell a lot of items on CL.
I NEVER buy or sale without direct phone conversation and I spell that out in ad.
If they are serious, they will call.
You can make a pretty fair judge of character with a short conversation---Impossible with email or text!
If they text or email, I tell them if interested call me.
Most don't !

My CL selling situation was a little different from yours but it was a truck nonetheless. I tried to sell a truck on CL but this was a fairly new semi tractor. Most of the calls I got were from jockeys wanting to sell my truck for me. They were a real nuisance. Finally I parked it by a major highway with a for sale sign and had it sold and gone in a few days.

Turn off email and only put phone in add. Best to spell out part of your number. Seems most of this foolishness stops quick.

Agree.
Turn off email.
As Jiles says you can get a sense of a person pretty quick on the phone. And I'm not interested in typing out answers to dumb emails.
And always, Always add pictures to your ad.

The reality is that people are just too shy to talk on the phone. Nothing different than ever, it's just that you'd never hear from most of these people if the only option was to call directly.

Couple of tech tips if you want to ensure calls only:

1. Select "no replies to this email" when posting your ad. This will prevent people from emailing you.
2. Check only the phone option, and include a phone number. DO NOT put your number in the ad. If you put it in the section provided for you, it is protected from bots and spammers.
3. If you get any texts, IGNORE them.

I have grown to like email and texting, Don't run for the phone and hate phone tagging, I'm never near the home phone.

Some people find email and texting to be the greatest things since sliced bread. Others just have a hard time adapting/accepting. It would help if there weren't so many kooks and tire-kickers out there.

That's what I get when I place my phone number in space provided---[b:17fda1906b]Is your item still for sale (been listed thirty minutes??)[/b:17fda1906b]

I only use phone. No text or email. I can tell more from a voice than a written world. Recently sold a car and a tractor on CL with only one looky loo contact

I will always call and talk with the seller before I go to see an item, and expect the same from someone coming to look at something I put up for sale.

E-mail makes things quick and simple to get the information I need that is often not in the ad.
Some just can not write a decent informative ad to save there life.

Once I have a pretty good idea I am interested in what is being offered for sale I do not mind having what often turns into a half hour conversation about how the crops are doing, what the weather has been like, where are cattle prices going to be this fall etc., followed by 5 minutes to get the directions and another 5 minutes for the history lesson on the item I am going to look at.

When an ad says calls only and I have called for the fifth time guessing when the seller is going to be home I just give up.

Many horror stories from CL ads and most used text or email to set up inspection.
When possible, I meet seller/buyer at a public place, deal only with cash and give no warranty.
After a short conversation, I have decided some ads, or buyers, were suspicious and cancelled them. Worked good for me several years.

What gets me is the people that only have a reply available through the CL system email. No phone # listed, no address either. So I email and email and email and get no answer. One guy finally responded after something like a dozen emails over as many days and told me he got so many emails he just trashed them! I'm smart enough to put something in the header like "Interested in your tractor, I live near you, not a robot". Why people won't put more info in they're ad's perplexes me. For goodness sake- LIST THE PRICE YOU WANT!!!!! This "make a reasonable offer" stuff is nuts. I don't know what they think is "reasonable" and the few offers I have made you'd have thought I'd insulted their wife, their mother and their dog.

I watch CL a lot, but I wish people would use their heads.

"Interested in your (insert item name here)." Any robot can do that.

"I'm not a robot." Do you think robots tell the truth?

"I live near you." Now that's just stalkerish.

I find that asking SPECIFIC questions about the tractor that are not in the ad, and including your phone number, is a good way to up your chances of getting a response.

Okay, I was trying not to be specific, but what I usually put in the header is the town I live in, that I'm responding to _____and I make it something other than their title from the ad and the road I live on to cover the "not a robot" part. I'm not dumb enough to think people won't think it's a scam artist or auto response if I don't change the wording, etc, but thanks for the advice. It would just make things a lot easier if they'd offer up a phone # and make it clear if they wanted texts or not.
