Laptop DVE player

Can anyone recommend a decent, free, DVD software program for my Win 10 laptop? Apparently MS didn't see fit to include a DVD player program, although I swear I watched a few on this machine right after I got it. Seems pretty silly to have the CD/DVD player mechanics (Drive E) and not be able to make use of it.

Get VLC Media player for Windows 10. Best totally free program you will find.

I absolutely agree - VLC rules the pack!

I'm VERY surprised that your Windows 10 software did not include Windows Media Player. You should also be able to download that for free from the Microsoft website.

That said, there's potentially one other problem, and that may be with your drive. If you have a CD/DVD drive, then everything should be good. However, there are also CD-only drives out there that will not play or record to DVD. It is also possible to have a CD read/write and DVD read-only drive, but I would think nowdays that most drives would be CD/DVD read/write.

The way to check is to click your little Start icon in the lower left corner, then select Control Panel. Once in Control Panel, look for Device Manager and click that. Now look for a line that says DVD/CD ROM Drives. Double click on that, and it will tell you what your drive is capable of.

Agreed on the vlc, simple and easy. I like kim komando for good place for free apps for computers and other electronics. She has a
radio show nationwide that plays locally with good info on products that seem solid and not expensive. Many frre places to go without
the headaches it seems.

Another vote for VLC. Downloaded it last week. Win 10 does include Windows media player. It will play media files, but will not run a DVD player if the computer does not have a built in drive.

Thanks guys, I have Media Player, but it won't work a DVD. I read something recently about Win 10 not having DVD player capability after an update? I dunno, but I swear I used to be able to do it. My oldest boy has same laptop and has DVD player.

I found the DVD heading in the control panel. Checked it and it says it works fine and is updated. Tried loading a DVD and it asks me what I want to do- either search for a new DVD player app in the "store" or take no action. Doesn't sound like I have a DVD player after to me.

Loaded the VLC player. Works great! Thanks! Do you know if it can be set for playing other than US region DVDs? I couldn't find that so far. There are some BBC DVDs I'd like to get that I can't find in our US format. (Tales from the Green Valley, Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, etc.)

Not sure about this part as I know NOTHING about Windows 10, other than I don't want it! However, it might be possible for you to check the driver for the CD/DVD drive. If this is the most current driver, is it for CD "and" DVD, or only for CD? If they do not have a new driver that includes DVD, then maybe there is an older driver you can revert back to - but I'm fairly certain there should be something out there.

If VLC will play the DVD, then I would say the correct driver is already on there....but again, not certain. Might be that the problem is with MS Media Player. ...Yet another reason I don't/won't use it!

Thanks again to everyone. On the region thing, it appears the people making the DVDs have outsmarted us again and made it so you have to buy a region specific program or player. I don't get it myself. You'd think they'd want to be able to sell as many DVDs as possible, but noooooooooo!

Regions are America's fault. We wanted things a certain way on our DVDs and could not agree with the rest of the world, so America gets its own region and the rest of the world gets theirs.

Just count your lucky stars that you can get something to play foreign DVDs so easily today. It wasn't always like that.

There are at least 9 or 10 region codes, not just the US and the rest of the world. From what I've read it has something to do with distributors wanting to see what sells where. Doesn't make much sense to me.
