Absolute Cheapest Shipping on Boxed Items

I'm having to ship several parts of these tractors I am parting out and USPS shipping is killing me. $45.00 to ship an $80.00 part. I know Fastenal is a good/cheap shipping source for palleted freight items but they told me they wouldn't do boxed items because they could easily loose it. Do y'all have any tips or suggestions shipping with USPS or UPS?? Or do y'all know of something better?? I see all of this "free shipping" stuff everywhere and I'm not sure how they are able to do it.

Does the buyer pay the shipping charges?
We do something called "pre-pay and add". We ship the part and then invoice them for the part + whatever freight we paid. We alternate between UPS, USPS, Speedee, FEDEX... for who's got the best rate.

They do pay the shipping costs but for advertising and trying to be competitive I try to list "low" shipping prices because that usually deters folks when it costs half the cost of the item in shipping. Just wondering if there are certain places that I've not heard of that are much cheaper or if there is a "trick" I don't know about with the USPS, UPS, etc.

Sir, May I suggest to ask the receiver/buyer if they have a preferred carrier and if they have an account established. If so have freight billed to their account number.

Prepaid and add to invoice is another option. Most carriers, with the weight, size and ship to location, can quote their charges before hand.

Haven't done any COD shipping in a long time. Sure some new rules have taken place.

Insurance charges for loss and/or damage can protect you and your client
and is something to discuss with the buyer.

Good luck, j

Depends on how big and how heavy. Items up to 70 (I think?) lbs the post office has really upgraded it's parcel delivery services and options. If its is heavy and will fit in a flat rate box that service cant be beat. They will beat UPS every time on price and most of the time beat them on delivery time.Actually UPS has become my last resort due to the rates. Heavy items cost $$ no matter who does it, I tried Fastenal and for the life of me I cant figure out why they get so much press as a great way to ship. I have never got a great price from them and add in the restrictions on where, when and how plus I have to take it to the store and my customer must go to the store,,I just wont fool with them. For heavy shipping I use U Ship (not Youship! ) and pick the carrier that gives best price quote, I pick the day and time for them to come pick it up and stick it on the truck.

On smaller parts, up to 70 lbs and fitting the boxes, USPS Flat Rate Priority mail is the best deal. There is also a Regional Rate structure, usually cheaper but less weight allowed.

As another poster stated, Fedex is usually cheapest on bulkier/heavier stuff. Open an account and you can compare pricing before shipping and print the labels at home.

Yeah I use flat rate when I can. This particular item now is a 3 bolt Hydraulic cylinder from a Farmall H. Not going to fit in a flat rate. Not sure what I will do with this one. Large heavy tractor parts aren't easy or cheap to ship. I will check with FedEx

Usually cheaper to ship to a business address if you can and have the customer pick it up there. SpeeDee Delivery in Iowa and surrounding states is pretty cheap.

"Free shipping" because the cost of shipping is incorporated into the price of the item. These places get bulk discounts because they ship so much, and if you knew what their cost for the item was, you'd probably lose your lunch.

On a pallet of widgets out of a container from China, I would be surprised if there was less than a 1000% markup. You're paying $20 for a $2 item, for example. Say $5 for shipping, and the seller walks away with $13 in his pocket.

The problem is finding that $2 item for $2. Sellers here want $40 for the same $2 import item, maybe with a different color paint. The cost of the freight is not getting it here from China, it's getting it from the warehouse to your house.

I really don't know how they do it. I bought a 5v computer fan recently for $3.25, epacket delivery straight from China. It's not very heavy but it's not much postage, either. Also bought a $109 stainless steel vent hood, 40 lbs, free delivery, excellent quality. Bought it for a welding exhaust hood for my shop and was really surprised at how good the quality was. Electronic touch controls I had to relocate so I had to get inside it.
