wooden trailer floor

Years back many of the older grain wagons with wooden floors received a paint brush application of used motor oil in our area. Those that treated the wooden floors on a timely basis had solid good wagons. Rod.

Dad used to apply used oil to the hayracks and manure spreader floors at least every other year or so. Do it on a hot dry day so it soaks in well. Yes it will be slippery for a while so best to do it well before needing to use the wagon so it has time to soak and "dry" a bit.

I have been treating my trailer with 2x6 floor boards with a mixture of used motor oil and diesel for many years. Each application seems to last 2-3 years. So far so good.

Mine is only treated in spots from oil, gear oil, and hydraulic fluid from hauling my tractor. The deck is nine years old but I used pressure treated wood. I can't say the oil spots are wearing any better than the untreated areas.

I got a two stage epoxy paint and painted the boards prior to installation. I have had many cattle, sheep, and horses in that trailer over the years and the floor has held up better than the rest of it. This epoxy was like rubber coating the whole board.

Diesel evaporates. Used motor oil will stay. Tree huggers will scream, but you aren't doing anything to amount to anything so what's the big deal. Besides petroleum products are much cleaner than they used to be, including "products of combustion". I use Canola oil for my deep fryers and save it for lube jobs like the trailer or the conical 3 pt fertilizer spreader.

(quoted from post at 15:43:57 07/11/17) Has anyone ever used diesel fuel or used motor oil to treat a trailer floor, thanks.

Used motor oil is what most of use. If you have some 80w-90 that you drained from a transmission, it can also be used. Even used ATF will work. Diesel fuel is kind of expensive for treating a trailer floor, but if you have some old stuff that is contaminated, mix it in with the used motor oil.
