This was in my FB Spokesman. Here is a chance to farm big time with a turn-key operation-6100 acres. I promise I will not bid against you.---Tee

I can't quite read all of the ad but I know what you're saying. It's amazing how big the parcels can get. Sometimes for fun I look at listings in the Western Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana etc that have tens of thousands of acres for sale... Usually big hunting lodges or enormous ranches, with some acres of farmland but mostly grass. A guy or gal could go and get lost on their own property and have to learn to survive the same way the pioneers did 150 years ago... Barring GPS.

There are several families from this area that went to Brazil and bought large tracks of land. Last i heard one was over 20000 acres.

Sadly, 6100 acres isn't all that big any more.

Wait until Boerson has to liquidate in the next year or so..he took over the Stamp farm when Stamp went under. Something over 100,000 acres?

Illinois Famly Farms also went under a few years ago, were they at 30-50,000 acres?

One of the guys on another site I frequent has a spread like that in New Mexico. It's a ranch, and if I remember right, it has been in his family for well over 100 years. Some of the pictures he has posted show mountains off in the distance, and everywhere between him, and those mountains, is part of the ranch.

I'd love to just have the money invested in a place like that.....

You're just doing it wrong then. A local BTO around here has a full time mechanic hired. From what I hear between the BTO and his hired hands they keep that mechanic busy from sun up to sundown. Has a genuine service truck with crane running around from field to field.

I'm not sure what the politics are in Paraguay so I'll stay here. 6100 acres really isn't that big now days. I don't know of very many crop farmers in my area that are less than 4000 acres. Some areas out west couldn't support 100 cow calf units on 6100 acres.

True BTOs have no need for mechanics. Equipment is replaced before it goes off warrantee.

Yeah, every one of the larger farms around here that I know of have large repair shops and at least two full time mechanics on the payroll.

Good grief, Jeff is the smallest guy in the county and I can't hardly keep up with the day to day repairs. We still take the big stuff to a full time independent mechanic.

Many Moons ago one of the national farm rags had an article about farming in South America, and Brazil at the time, was the hot spot to consider. One of the warnings was that you needed to do a very careful study of the politics of the country in question and that free speech was not a widely practiced commodity in South America, especially when it came to criticizing the gooberment.

I guess it all comes done to what your definition of a "big time operator" is. I suspect in many cases on this board it's anyone larger than yourself.
