Controlling cigarette outlet with ignition switch

My boy got me a dashcam that plugs in cigarette outlet in old car that has power all the time. Without cutting wires I decided to use an open fuse. Solder green. Wire to it. Opened file link with drill.

Green wires go too relay contact. A fuse holder will be wired in to replace 20 amp cigarette fuse.

I picked up power to energize could by soldering a wire to obe side of cruse control fuse.

Simple, easy modification to control cigarette outlet. Works flawless. I carry a spare 10 and 20 amp fuse just in case.
Does anyone sell a fuse with wires attached? Be easier than soldering on wires

You could draw power off the ignition switch or if the fuse is all you are worried about they make inline fuse holders which has short wires attached.

I actually "want" my cam to record with the ignition off. I turn it on when we leave the house and it records until we get home. If nothing happened during that time, then I simply record over it the following day.

I have 5 cameras; one looking each direction, plus a dedicated backup camera. If ANYTHING happens, the whole world will clearly be able to see whether or not I was at fault! Even have an aux. DVR hidden in the truck that records from all 5 at once. So if just a quick dashcam review is needed, I have the SD card. Otherwise, I can show all 5 views all synchronized together.

Also have a backup cam on my 16' enclosed trailer. When it's engaged, the backup cam on the truck is disengaged.

kcm.MN If I recorded all the time I would just document my many daily screw ups. LOL I get enough grief without giving them evidence.

I use very little power through switch to control relay. I have blown 20 amp cigarette fuse before plugging in 12v refrigerator.

No way do I want to pass 20 amps through ign sw.

And if I tried recording all the time, I would have many pics of me getting the jumper unit to jump the dead battery. I took a cooler that plugs into the cig lighter on a trip one time- never again- kept forgetting to unplug it when car was off, with the predictable result.

In one of the work vans at my last job all I had to do was pull out the lighter and they had a harness behind it that was controlled by the ignition. They had 2 plugs for the lighter, 1 hot all the time and 1 controlled by the key. Kinda took all the fun out of changing it over.

Or half way through the night you remember you forgot to unplug it. Then you have to get out of bed and go unplug it. No thank you. I solved that problem a very easy way.

I pulled mine out. Only found two wires. 2005 Buick must be cheap. I've heard some cars have two lighter outlets. One is hot all the time other is switched. Both my car and truck are hot all the time.

I just hooked a tap wire to the acc. Wire on the radio. Have two " power ports" in my Ford ash tray. The right one is now for the dash cam. EVERYONE out there. If you don't have a dash cam you are insane !!!!

George I Keep telling you just go buy you a new ford pickup . The lighter plug is ignition on, BUT when you get out of the truck it stays on for about 15 minutes then drops out. Perfect.... But then I know you are not going to turn loos of all that money.. like you solution looks like it would work for the camera.. Oh took your advise replaced a 2 bulb 4 ft florescent with one of the Rural King two bulb unit like 26 bucks they were out of the single unit $ 19 dollars or so. I really have the white lite now.

JM,
A old college friend just bought a new F150. I'm impressed with it. I bought a new 2007 GMC, which only has 90k, only because it was the end of the classic style. The bed side of today's truck is taller than the top of the tool boxes on my classic style. I need 3 tool boxes on a truck. I would hate to carry a step ladder to see what's inside my tool box.

So my truck is 10 years old, 90k. 10 years from now I'll have 180k.

I sold my old 1995 GMC with 150k miles, same truck and engine, to another friend. It's still on the road. No mechanical issues. It has 230k miles.

I may not live long enough to wear my truck out. Only possibility of getting a new F150 is to wreck mine, total it out. Yes, I'm cheap. It's not difficult for me to pay cash new truck, I just can't see spending money just because I have an itch to buy a new truck. Same with my 12 year old car, 80K.

My fix was cheap, fast and easy to do. I bought (6) 12v 30 amp relays off ebay for less than $4 each. I use relays on many things.

I have kept you with you and let me say I really admire how you handle things. You always find a way to FIX not replace which is todays mentality. They increase that bed height so they can brag about load cu feet but to me I could do with one about a foot deep. At least then I could reach something on the floor of the bed from the side. May have to get me one of those dash cameras.

Stephen,
You don't understand why I used a relay. I can't remember to unplug dash cam. By tapping off the cruse control fuse, relay drops out when I turn the key off, power is removed from cigarette outlet. It's all Automatic, no brainer, no forgetting to unplug it.
